How much should I pay to have my drain rodded?
I have a victorian terrace house and the downpipe issues into a drain that travels under the front garden and has become blocked with leaves and roots. I'd like to put out a job on one of the sites where tradesmen compete for work, ie MyHammer or Rated Tradesmen, but have never had this done before and have no idea what it…

uPVC sash windows with gaps!
Moved into this house earlier this year, the previous previous owners had the Double Glazing installed. It's a Victorian house so they had sash windows installed in the living room and in the bedroom directly above. The windows are a bay style, with 3 windows in each, the middle one being the only one that actually slides.…

Would you report illegal gas work???
Hopefully a hypothetical question . If you knew someone (who you have had a run in with in the past) was installing a new heating system in the property attached to yours and they weren't gas safe registered would you report them to gas safe and risk falling out with your neighbours (the circumstances would make it obvious…

Tips on Bath Sealant Tape
Hello all. I'm hoping for some advice and tips on using Bath Sealant Tape. It's being dropped off today, so I intend to use it later on.... I have been told that a good quality household glue can and should be used to make use the tape bonds with the tiles. Is this correct? I've cut away the excess original silicon and…

Bright Ideas needed re oven
Hello, My gas oven has decided to give up the ghost right before Christmas which leaves me in a quandary. I am currently unemployed and my JSA (c) is about to run out. The hob works fine and we have a small top oven which works only at the maximum temperature. I think it is the thermostat but money is very very very tight…

House Humidity
I recently got one of those little temperature and humidity device as we have a problem with condensation and the doors have started to stick and some wont even close. Any idea how to fix the doors? Is it a case of taking them down and sanding them? If so is this quite easy for a DIY novice? So I wanted to check the…

Moving utility room? services come into the house there at the moment
Wanting to create a bigger kitchen/living space. I've just had an architect come out who made everything sound so easy peasy. We are in need of a study as well. He suggested that the current utility could easily be turned into the study and the utility moved into part of the existing kitchen which would be extended. All my…

Installing new tumble dryer
Hi All I just had my new Hotpoint tumble dryer delivered and have gone to install it but there is a slight problem. Our previous tumble dryer was a Zanussi which was vented on the left so I made sure the new one was also vented on the left. Unfortunately the new tumble dryer vent is about two inches higher and slightly to…

Cleaning linen-look? curtains
Hi, was wondering if anyone could offer advice about heavy linen-look? curtains...it does say to dry-clean them, however I would perhaps risk a light wash in the washing machine to freshen them up. I'm not a fan of dry-cleaning as I'm never convinced they are cleaned thoroughly. Apart from that I'm sure it'll cost a packet…

Solid fuel fireplace
I'm still pondering what to do with an existing solid fuel fireplace. The old ugly stone hearth and surround are gone, and the floor in front of the fireplace where the old hearth was is patched with mortar, and level. The fireplace is small, with a fire brick insert, the kind with three sides. The alternatives are: a)…
