DVLA Tax Disc Fine
Hi everyone, Much to my surprise I received a letter through the post today saying I had a £200 fine for having no tax on my vehicle. To my surprise, given that my current tax expires in June 2015. Basically I can only think of two options 1. My car for some reason has not been updated on the new system as having tax. 2.…

Inheritance Tax advice
My father died in 2006 and left everything to mum, so no IHT was payable though the joint estate would have been enough to warrant it (i.e was greater than the 2006 threshold of £285k) Mum has just died and I've been told that the IHT threshold is today's (£325k) plus dad's combined, so £610k. IS this true??

Tax Liability for a Community Group?
Hello I am a member of a community group. We are funded through membership subscriptions and donations. We also sell tickets for an annual concert, which usually results in a surplus after expenses. We are not a charity. Our overall income surplus is around £500 a year, which is used to fund future expenditure of the…

Gifts of Money - NOT Inheritance
Hello, Can anyone clear up a simple (I hope) question? What if any money am I allowed to receive without it being subject to a self-assessment tax liability? There have been many articles and forum discussions on gifting money in relation to family inheritance tax - but this isn't anything to do with that. Thanks.

Filing US tax return - any experience?
My wife has been working in the US on an O1 visa since last June and needs to file a tax return. I think she will need an accountant who deals with ex-pats as she still earns some income from her consulting business in the UK, which she pays tax on in the UK and would need to avoid paying tax in the US on this as none of…

Advice on property that is rented out.
Own a property that is rented. Pay tax on the rent. Paid 47000 for the property and if sold would probably get about 65000. Am I right in thinking that there would be 18000 profit. So would pay 18% tax on £9000. But as Property shared ownership with another then as below £11000 then no tax payable. Did get parents home…

Catching up on NI, but self-employed
Hello, I have not registered as self-employed, but did some website work on the side over the last few years. I haven't made any profit from it and turnover is next to nothing also. I've paid no tax or NI during this period as I have been unemployed. Is it possible to register as self-employed now for that period? Or can I…

Company Car Tax/Child Benefit
Hello All Couple of queries. I am a higher rate tax payer, earning about £43,000 a year with BIK car tax meaning I pay 40%. First Question My employer wishes to not have company cars anymore, meaning that a payment of £750 pcm (before tax) would be made. This would therefore be £9,000 p.a. in taxable income. The problem I…

Hi all, Needing some quick advice. I have received two "further notice of enforcements" from an "Enforcement agency" both with separate reference numbers One is for roughly £600.00 with the liability order dated the 08/08/2014. Gifting excess income
I am soooo confused! I have been told that I can save on IHT (or, rather, my children can) by giving them money out of my income. I actually have been doing this anyway - I pay a set amount off my daughter's credit card every month and I pay life and house insurances for my son every month. Apparently, so I am told, this…
