    It's based on meta tags (google if unsure what this means), back links, relevant links and submitting to search engines. It'll also depend what your website is about. Popular website topics are harder to rank.
    However google changes what it prefers to look for with your website all the time.
    Might be worth setting up a blog as well to link to your website.

    Try:- http://www.warriorforum.com - a free forum for internet marketers with some 'big' name online gurus like Yanik Silver

    Well, your question can be split into two like this:

    1, how to get listed

    or

    2, how to get listed on the first page.

    The first is very easy, but long winded and will not get you onto the first page when searching for keywords only:

    http://www.google.com/addurl/

    therefore, you need to be a bit more creative with your website and how you market it.

    For example, using appropriate metatags for google to "summarise" your site.

    Use links to other ranked sites and see if you can get them to link to you too. This means that google will follow the links in their sites to your site and get you listed quicker.

    Good tutorial:

    http://www.seoelite.com/HTML_SEOLesson3-wf.htm

    Stay clear of unethical methods of getting yourself listed, for example hidden text i.e white text on a white background that tricks google into listing you first.

    They will block you if they suspect you have cheated!

    Do you have competitors with websites?

    If so check their sites out for google scoring (set the drop down list to googlebot):

    This will give you good ideas for wording your site and defining your tags...

    Hope this helps - SEO is a skill all in it's self!!!

  • I agree with all the advice above. Getting listed high up in Google is a holy grail pursued by millions of webmasters every day. If it was easy they'd all do it.

    Google's decision who to place where in the rankings is placed on a complicated recipe (or "algorithm") the precise detail of which is a closely guarded secret and changes from time to time. However, there are certain features which tend to be pretty constant.

    (1) It helps to have the keywords you want to be ranked for appearing in the title and description of your webpage, and better still in the url; (but not in a repeated or "spammy" way)

    (2) It helps to have those keywords appearing in the content of your website, but again not too often, and only as part of genuinely helpful content;

    (3) Perhaps most importantly, it helps to have links from other websites which are relevant to your website. Not all links are equally valuable. The most valuable links are those from main pages on reputable sites which Google ranks highly, where there are not too many other outgoing links on the same page. Google also looks at the "anchor text" or the links - the ideal being to have lots of high value links whose anchor text contains the keywords you want to be found for.

    How do you achieve this? With some difficulty. Google does not like people trying to buy their way to the top of the rankings, because if you could buy your way in the rankings would be less helpful to Google's users. What Google is looking for are genuine links from people who have linked to you because they like your content and want to recommend it to their visitors. Nevertheless, many successful websites do engage in link building campaigns which successfully improve their rankings. The following tactics may work:

    - submit posts containing links in relevant forums which allow them - generally not this one :(
    - submit your site to quality directories;
    - write helpful articles on topics relevant to your site (but not using content from your site - Google does not like duplicated content) and submit them to sites which allow you to include a link back to your site;
    - make a friendly approach to other webmasters whose websites cover a similar theme to yours; a one way link is better than a reciprocal link, but a reciprocal link is better than nothing;

    You can pay people to do some or all of these things for you. SEO firms are expensive; getting someone to build links for you (posting the task on a site such as http://www.scriptlance.com is usually much cheaper, but you risk getting low value links or links from low value neighbourhoods for which Google may penalise you if you are unlucky.

    Overall, if you are seeking to be listed for competitive keywords, you will probably struggle. But if you have a site providing really helpful content in a niche area, you will find it much easier. And it would probably be a good idea to spend some time in specialist SEO related forums getting some free advice from real experts.

    All the above advice assumes you do not want to try to game Google and use tactics of which Google disapproves. It is possible to race up the rankings for a short while by using disapproved tactics, but it is very high risk, because if Google catches on the site may be blacklisted and never get significant traffic from Google again.

    Good luck!

    Unless you have a bit of money you can always do as much as possible yourself by reading a lot of what's on the Internet. Only earlier I read a decent article about SEO for beginners at http://www.chapterzero.co.uk/articles/what-is-seo-google-recommend.aspx.aspx.

    Then there's always sites that go a bit more indepth like a search engine marketing news site, https://www.sphinn.com I like as it always keeps abreast of the latest online marketing techniques people are always trying out, some with hilarious consequences.

    If you type search engine optimisation into google, most results returned will be SEO companies trying to sell you their services so its best to follow a few sites that are information based like seobook.com.

    I think the best article I've ever come across was over at http://websitehelpers.com/seo/

    I've always had that link bookmarked and even for experts in the field, its always good to go back and read on the basics.

    I may have just been lucky, but.....

    My website has been around for 7 months now. I have not SEO'ed it or bought any links or anything like that. For my "Keyword" (ie the word around which my site is based), Google returns 3.1M results- I ave been listed on page 3/4 after approx 2 months. Now I'm 7 months in, I alternate between page 1 (!!!!!) and page 2.

    As others have said- don't try to engineer it. Just produce information enthusiastically and try to offer "a different angle". If you do that- your site will become popular. If it does, Google will LOVE YOU.

    Hi

    Get listed on the many many many directories that are out there, lots of them are non-reciprocal and will give you lots of inbound links, see http://www.directorycritic.com/ to find massive lists and updated daily of directories. The Holly Grail used to be getting into dmoz and I guess it still is, BUT, it is hard to get a listing, it is human edited by volunteers. https://www.dmoz.org is good because it is syndicated all over the internet (I used to run a dmoz script that scrapped the directory onto my URL for example).

    I have a directory in my profile, so if you want place a link on my site.

    Also, try https://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk and https://www.teneric.co.uk/forums as both have a good amount of members, they are UK based and the last time I looked both had SEO sub-forums.

    Sorry, but this isn't quite right. Meta tags don't determine rankings in Google.
