Where to invest a lump sum ?

From the sale of a house, I will be getting approx 40K and as I'm renting at the moment and I'm not sure what area I will be buying in (don't even mention house prices!!) so I don't want to buy now, and I'm not sure where to put the money for it's best benefit.

I know I can put into 3K into an ISA, but what about the rest. I don't want to just give a huge chunk to the tax man!! Also I don't know how to handle it when the next self assessments come around.

Any idea's would be appreciated.

when investing, you can put 7k into an ISA. Only when saving can you use 3k.

You havent given much to go on. By saying you want to invest, you are suggesting equities which can vary from low risk corporate bonds/gilt funds right upto high risk speciality funds like media, tech and medical funds.

A little more info on what you want would be useful.

Yeh, 3k in an cash isa.

If you don't want to put the rest into a taxable account you could look at the National Savings investment products such as the Index Linked Certs.

Avoid the stock funds unless your looking at the very long-term, over 15 years.

Try to invest your funds across the different investment classes... property, bonds, equities and deposits... see my post in Property board: "Balance portfolio and hedge against the slide".
