How long for cash and cheque time to clear?

Hi. I paid in £100 cash and £100 cheque over the counter at the same time at my local hsbc branch today around 2 o'clock. Question is, should the cash be showing up in my account yet? I have checked my account and there's no sign of the 100 pounds. Does it make any difference that I paid the cheque in with the cash?. i've never paid in cash and it's not cleared instantly.

Thanks

  • The cash should be available instantly. Not sure why it isn't.

Cheques take anything from 3 - 7 working days to clear, bear in mind tomorrow is a bank holiday so that will add an extra day to the clearing process.
Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.

The cash will only show instantly if it was paid in on a separate paying in slip, if cash and cheque on same paying in slip then it will show when the cheque is processed after hours. This is particular to HSBC I am not sure if it's the same at other banks.

It's probably been mis-entered as a £200 cheque deposit. If they haven't noticed it and corrected it at the end of the day (and given the time of your post it looks as though they haven't) it will probably stay that way.

While you're waiting, you could read your T&C's to see what should happen...

    Read condition's 3.6 & 3.5 (in that order)

If they paid it in as a cheque deposit, at the end of the day the cheques would not balance so it should be corrected. I know that at Nationwide all cash deposits and cheque deposits are entered as separate transactions and the receipt shows this. All cash deposits are instant whilst cheques can take from 3 to 7 days depending on the account they are paid into.
