Mobile connection charges on sky talk

Options
Hi all i have just got my 1st bill from sky talk after moving from bt and noticed that they charge for unconnected mobile phone calls, I phoned sky and they said this is normal but bt say they only charge once a call is connected is this just sky or do all cps providers charge the same way as sky do.

Thanks for any info

Welcome to the MSE forums cyclonercv.

If you were sensible and left your line rental with BT (i.e. moved to Sky only as your Carrier PreSelect [CPS] calls provider), you are in the best possible position - you can choose how you make your calls despite, by default, your calls normally going via Sky Talk.

If so, sign up for a 18185 account too and make your calls to UK mobiles via them.

Please see the 'HERE' link in my signature below for other ways to save money on your calls (assuming that you still pay your line rental - BT Together Option 1 - to BT).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thanks Heinz

I should have gave a bit more detail I just wasn't expecting sky to charge for unconnected mobile calls, my wife usually gives me a couple of rings on my work mobile and i ring her back so i would still pay if i use 18185 as they charge the moment the phone rings.
We still have a bt line so routing the call back through them could be an option.

    Cheers

No, 18185 charges on connection so 'CLI dumping' by your wife from your home landline would be cost-free (as should dialling direct on Sky CPS or BT) .

  • I spoke to someone at sky talk customer services and was told that when you make a land line to mobile call they start charging when it starts ringing so you have to pay if the call is answered or not my bill seems to confirm this.
I don't see how they can charge a connection fee when they haven't connected you, I will check with them again to make sure.
Bt said they will only charge connection fee ect if the call is actully answered,
Will check 18185 as i thought all the overide providers operated the same system off charging the moment the call starts ringing.

You're almost right about override (gateway) providers - they start charging halfway through dialling - as soon as you've finished dialling their 0844 or 0871 gateway number - and before you've dialled your target number.

OTOH, 18185 is an indirect access provider - hence charging starts when the call is answered.

Just had a thought - was your wife using a gateway provider to dump the CLI on your cellphone? That would account for her being charged for an unconnected call.

  • My wife was calling directly through sky talk and i have been charged a connection charge for lots of 2 second calls which were never answered, I have called sky again and asked why they are charging a connection charge for calls that are not connected and this time they have agreed it does not seem right and could be a problem there end, They are checking this out and have said they will ring me back.
I wonder if this is just me or everyone who uses sky talk

Sky,s 6p connection charge for chargeable calls should only be raised if the call is connected.

    Something's not right.

BT, Sky, Primus, 18185 etc don't charge until the call is connected.

It's only services that you have to dial thru, such as 0844, 0871 numbers where you are charged as soon as you hit their system.

Do you have voicemail on the mobile, is it somehow going to voicemail?

1280 is the code to route the call back over BT, if you have been wise and not moved line rental to Sky.

18185 is the code for Call 18185, no charge until connected.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)
  • Still waiting for a call back from sky on this but the calls in question don't ring long enough to go to my voice mail and when we were with bt they never showed on our bill it's only since we went over to sky

As you line rental is still with BT, the obvious solution is to program your mobile number into the home phone your wife uses with a 1280 prefix - so she always 'dials' you on BT.
