More evidence of British Airways' penny-pinching attitude to loyalty passengers.
I didn't know until today that if you book a BA Hold flight when the price offered includes an Avios discount it can't be used when you then try to complete the booking.

How is that an example of penny-pinching? I'm sure BA are happy for people to use their Avios for cash discounts, otherwise they wouldn't be offering them (and the rate they offer is pretty poor anyway). More likely it's simply a technical limitation.0
