Money Moral Dilemma: Should I take cash left in the self-service machine?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I found a tenner someone left in one of the supermarket self-service machines. Should I hand it in, donate it to charity or just keep it for myself?

I found £30 left behind at the self scan a while ago. I handed it in as was told that the supermarket could get the information from the self service till to see where the money had come from (credit/debit card information). I hope this was true. I wonder if I did the right thing?0

Since the person who left it paid by cash in order to get change, I'm not sure how the supper market could get the shoppers card details from a transaction? Unless they meant their loyalty card (if they used one) but then how would they be able to tell who left the notes behind unless they planned to cross ref anyone who had that correlation of notes given as change up to the point you handed it in with cctv that may / may not show the shopper not picking up their change. Unfortunately the cynical side of me would be surprised if any supermarket would put the effort into doing that, I would like to be proved wrong though.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

In some supermarkets, the self-service machines have a 'cashback' option for people who are paying with a debit or credit card. So there might be a possibility of tracing them.
I've found money in the self-service tills a few times. I've always handed it over to the customer service staff.
The money may or may not eventually be reunited with the person who left it behind. That's outwith my control - but it's not a reason for me to take the cash.0 -
I left some money in the self service area (after paying by debit card and using the cash back service). I realised as soon as I got home, rang the store and someone had handed it in. It was money I could not afford to lose so I was very grateful!0

I would always hand it in. I've left money there a couple of times (in fact I try not to get cash back in the self service as I know what I'm like) but I've always got it back so I could hardly take someone else's...0

I thought (but not completely sure) that the cash hoppers in the self-service tills had CCTV cameras in, so they can record what cash is actually dispensed and when someone picks it up.
If it's done properly it'll be synchronised to the till transaction record and the store CCTV cameras.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
what does the question have to do with Food Shopping and Groceries deals?
Surely this is on the wrong board?0 -

I completely agree. I have forgotten to take my cashback on two separate occasions (never ask for it now!) and both times I have returned to the store with my receipt and ID and been able to get the money back.
I think it's quite sad that people automatically assume that the staff might keep it for themselves really. I know lots of people who work in retail who would never dream of doing such a thing.
I'm so thankful there are honest people out there who have handed in my cash so that I've been able to get it back.0 -
If I found a wallet, I would certainly hand it in. If I found a sum of money, then my actions would depend on the amount; I would hand in large amounts, but would give small amounts to charity / homeless people. If someone realised and convinced me it was theirs, then I would give small amounts back out of my own pocket and accept the fact I donated to charity.
I don't believe cash will necessarily find its way back to the "owner". A bank will probably keep it in its coffers, and shop staff will do as their conscience dictates. At least my way, I believe I'm doing the best I can in an awkward situation.0 -
Hand it in.
You are *not* entitled to keep it, under English Law that is called "Theft by Finding" and people have been prosecuted for it.if i had known then what i know now0
