Online Shopping = Supplier trying to wriggle out of refund

Hi
My son bought an Adidas jacket online. He tried it on, it was far too big so I personally packaged it back up and returned it intact with all the labels.
The online supplier has now emailed to say the item has been worn and has obviously been washed as it smells of detergent. They have said they wouldn't send an item to a customer that was washed/worn. They have seen and smelt more than I did as it was in perfect condition with all the tags still attached. How on earth could I wash and dry it without ruining the attached labels?
Any ideas anyone about how to reply.
Thanks
