I was thinking about the odd ingredients we have lurking in our cupboards, which we will all probably want to use up. The ones we buy and can never remember for the life of us why or what we bought them for. I was thinking if we were to list some, then others could make suggestions as to what we could use them for/in.

For instance, I have Mace and dry egg whites ... there's probably more !!

That actually does sound nice. Better still if you can combine more than one oddment.

  • Re OP: mace is the outer husk of nutmeg so can be substituted in recipes. The dried egg white can be used in royal icing or to make meringue (saves using fresh eggs and ending up with lots of leftover yolks!).
    Happy cooking!

I have two things in the cupboard that I don't know what to do with. One is a vacuum pack of peeled chestnuts and the other is a bag of rose sugar. Ideas please?

Chestnut and chick pea soup: chop and fry 1 onion, 1 carrot and 1 stick celery until soft, add roughly chopped chestnuts and a drained tin of chick peas. Add hot water and flavour with vegetable stock powder or cube. Add a few sprigs of rosemary, simmer until all ingredients are piping hot, serve with chunks of crusty bread. Recipe from Viterbo, town north of Rome.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Oh dear, I have got nutmeg already and think from memory I bought it to go in some sort of casserole type dish. The egg powder I have bought more recently, but no clue why as I hate meringue.

    Thanks.
