Country cats to town cats

My two cats have been country cats, now nearly 2 years old. They come and go as they please. I am now moving into the city for family reasons and don't think that they will survive the traffic! I really want to keep them and wondered about putting a large run in the large garden, with lots of climbing posts etc. Do you think this would be OK or would it be cruel to confine them?

Hard to say. If you have a huge garden, and you will give them the run of the house too (will the house lead out to the run and back in BTW?) then I guess they will get used to it. Cats are quite adaptable. Are you on a busy main road?

Yes - very busy main road! The house will lead out to the run - they do spend a lot of time indoors curled up on my lap! But they will have the run of the house - just not the run of the countryside to kill things!

Hmmmm, well I can't see it being a MASSIVE problem. What size will the run be? Like 12 X 12 feet or so, like the size of a room? Guess it depends on the size of the garden. They will have the whole house too, and as you say, cats sleep more hours than not. I think it will be weird for them to begin with, but it's got to be preferable to having them killed within the first week. Maybe get advice from the vet??? :)

There is the theory that very busy roads are safer, as the traffic is so heavy and constant, that the cat is less likely to attempt to cross.
Saying that, I live in the country, have a busy road out the front, and will be allowing my cats access to a run ( if the damned thing ever turns up ) I won't risk them to the road.

Thanks Celli - can I ask where you are getting your run from?

To be honest, the cat runs and enclosures seem like they would be better if they were made, rather than bought: they are very expensive. I googled them and they were between £500 and £800.

Is this the sort of thing you're talking about?

I'm getting mine from Animal Runs R Us on E Bay, but Id hang fire on ordering, mine was supposed to arrive yesterday and hasn't turned up, I've been unable to contact the seller.
I've ordered a 12x 9 pen, if you want, I'll let you know if, or when, it arrives and if it's worth the money, which was under £300 , including delivery to Fife.

Yes, this is what I had in mind. But, as you say, could be better made by a joiner! I am just concerned that my boys aren't unhappy being unable to chase and kill all the local wildlife! Though I personally would prefer that..They also love my two dogs and would really miss them if I had to try to rehome them. And I would miss them curling up on my feet at night!

I am in Angus - so not far from you - please let me know if you are happy with it!
