house insurance after death

My friend recently died and I am her executor. When she died I notified Age UK as she had house insurance with them of around £33 per month. They said they would keep it going for 60 days and by then the furniture should be cleared. I presumed they would then reduce the premium.

However now the 60 days are up they have increased it by £12 per month to £45 and put it lots of exclusions. I will ring them tomorrow but is this usual?

There are now no contents and I only need to cover fire until it is sold (Age UK won't now cover escape of water, malicious damage or protection against squatters!)

It's because the house unoccupied now that the premium is going up, even with all the exclusions. But shop around, you may be able to reduce the premium if not the exclusions.

Yes it is normal...and you probably will find that even if you approach other insurers they may not take the property on.

We had a similar situation last year when my mother went into a nursing home...once the property became empty the premium seemed to double and the exclusions were quite imposing ....sadly the property will now fall under the term of empty and unoccupied and therefore becomes more of a risk than an inhabited house.

Many thanks for those responses. I will phone them today but it looks as though this is a common occurrence for insurance companies.

I just presumed that with no contents left and so many exclusions they might have reduced the premium.

Remember to drain the central heating system if the house is going to unoccupied for a long time.
