How much!!

Hi all,

I currently have a Baxi back boiler and am considering getting a Combi. We have just had a swalec guy around to give us a quote. He said that because the pipework is the original, it is not wise to join a combi system to it as it may cause leaks as the water pressure maybe too much. For a complete new system in a 3 bed semi detached house he has quoted us £7,000-£8000.

What are peoples view of this, is it accurate? Anyway to get it cheaper but still with the correct safety measures in place.

Thanks,
Darren

in my experience the large utility companies can be quite expensive so the advice would be to get a second and even possibly a third quote to compare like for like prices.

Having said that British Gas did work out for us cheapest on one job,but they have subsequently ended up to 20% more expensive than local heating companies on at least 2 other houses we have had heating installed in

We paid just over £6k 3 years ago for a full system in a 3bed house from a local guy. The BG quote was a smidge over £7k.

while it may be true that changing from an open vented system to a sealed system may cause leaks on inferiour pipework & fittings.

you could always go for an open vented boiler & then the pipework is under the same pressure as now it doesn't have to be converted to a combi or sealed system.

get a couple of local RGI's around to give you some more quotes & options
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Thanks for the replies to date.

I am interested in hearing more about the open vented boiler, does it do the same as a combi boiler, can we ue the old pipes then or would we still be risking leaks etc. I am a novice when it comes to this!!

The risk of any leaks due to the pressure in the system with a new combi is extremely low.

There is more of a risk of leaks because of the chemical used when flushing the system out, and this is still extremely low.

The system would have to be flushed to do a proper job whether an open vented boiler was fitted, or a system/combi boiler.

The rep has just been trying to scaremonger you into having a bigger job done than you need.

A very approximate guide to change you BBU to a combi would be between £2300 and £2800 + VAT.

    Thanks Gas4You.

Can i have other peoples views, how much of a risk would i be taking by converting back boiler to new combi BUT using old pipes. I'm guessing their original so possibly 40 years.

I had a BB, replaced with combi, kept most of pipework and rads, cost just over £2k with Worcester Bosch with 7 year guarantee.....
