Right I have summer dress something like this I have two problems

1) it is rather low and shows rather a lot of boob and even shows off part of bra in the middle.

2) when I sit down the cross pieces are really loose. When I stand up it looks fine apart from showing off a rather lot of my boobs.

I am novice when it comes to dress making but I do have a sewing machine. I have been watching the Great British sewing bee and there are no darts in the top parts.

So not sure what to do. Try and sort the top part out or just turn it in to a skirt. The only thing is just under the top part is smocking.

Any ideas. I know it was cheap about £7 but I don't feel happy wearing it to work or out due to the top part. Don't want to give my delivery drivers at work a heart attack with the cleavage on show :rotfl:

Thanks in advance.

Yours

Calley

  • Can you shorten the straps a bit or are they the right length when you stand up?

Would sewing a little triangle of fabric over your cleavage save your blushes? :)

    P.S. That dress looks lovely!

It's lovely! My dd has one similar and she wares a little strappy vest top under it in one of the colours. Or you could sew a wide piece of coordinating lace across the gap, underneath of course.
I enjoyed the sewing bee too!

I would shorten the straps and sew the cross over bit so it doesn't gape when you sit down.

Sorry forgot to mention that the straps are the shortest they can be and are digging in a bit.

Sadly that is not the dress I have.

I never thought of the material cross the front. I don't mind showing off a bit of cleavage.

But it still leaves the baggyness when sat down!!!!

I have the same problem with M@talan dresses, I find lifting the shoulder straps usually fixes it.

I also managed to pick up what I call "bibs" from @von - they are basically U shaped bits of material with a lacy edge that attach to your bra straps - gives the effect that you have a camisole on underneath.

Will a pin, or broach on middle of the crossover not fix it?

I have a few dresses that do similar. I go for the vest option usually, or a very pretty camisole. I know its not ladylike, but its better than the option of just flashing.
  • Could you stitch in a lace panel into the front to preserve your modesty? You can get some lovely lace panels, both stretchy and non- stretchy, in all sorts of depths and colours.

When you've got the dress on pin it where it naturally falls and you're happy with it sufficiently covering your modesty then take it off and simple tack it securely in place. That should prevent any mishaps x
