Hello,

I have registered today for the Open Uni and start in October. I have been allocated a PI number today and tried to get an NUS card and the pi number that I have been given isn't working on the NUS website.

From reading around ive heard loads of different reasons why and one of them is that it isn't a full time course that im doing. I have emailed NUS and they have said its to do with the module not starting until October, but again I have read about other people being able to get these cards now???

Has anyone else been in this situation before?

Thanks

Brett

You can get an NUS Extra with a part time course so it's not that.

I would have thought it's either because you only registered today and aren't totally in the system yet or because your course doesn't start til October. Try again in a week or so.

  • It's because you won't be a "current" student as your course has not commenced yet and you are not actively studying at the moment. This happened to me a couple of years ago around the same time. I couldn't get an NUS card because although I was registered on a course, it hadn't started when I tried to get a card. I don't think you'll be able to get a card until October, but then at least you will get the full benefit of the year, rather than April to Sept anyway.

    Hi Brett,
I had to wait until my OU course started before getting my NUS card. I'm sure plenty of people register but then don't start courses.
    Good luck with your studies

The NUS cards last from 1st August to 31st July so it's very unlikely they'd let you get one now as you won't be a student at any point in the academic year it will be for. If people are able to get them early then it's likely they are getting them in August or September as then it's for an academic year they will be a student for. It could also be they are only getting them a week or so early when the Open Uni have confirmed them as a student.

I'm also pretty sure they don't offer any discount for you buying the card late either so I'd question whether you'd get enough discounts out of it to cover the cost of the card between now and the end of July. I've had one since October/November time that I won in a competition at my uni and am glad I didn't buy one as I haven't had enough discounts to cover the fee (though I do try to get everything cheaply which rules out most of the stores they offer discounts for even with the discount applied).

They have just changed it so you get 12 months from the point of applying. Just renewed mine (currently doing my latest ou course) but think you will have to wait until October to apply as others have said. What course are you going to do?

You're not a student yet so you won't get your student discount, that's the only reason :)
  • Just thought I'd share my experience as there's differing opinions on here. Last year I got my NUS card in about June after they changed the rules so that it's valid for a whole year regardless of when it was bought. I didn't begin my study until October but I had no issues with getting my NUS card as I was registered as a student.

I guess your details are still going through the OU system just now.
    Thank you competition posters!
