Home Top Up.
I am on prepay electricity with british gas (bless 'em) and I have recently opted to use their home top up. For anyone not familiar, its a usb device that you hook up to your pc, then you insert your key into it and you can load credit straight onto your key with a registered debit/credit card. In short it saves me a trip to the shops when i'm caught short on electricity.
Sounds great but there are a few issues which might save others the hassle I have had.
1. It only works with IE (Internet Explorer 7-9)
2. It only works with IE x86 (32bit) It will not work with x64 under any circumstances.
3. if, like me, you are running IE10 then you are also stuffed...Unless you run a registry hack to report to the top-up page that your IE10 is actually IE9.
After finally sussing that lot out, its quite a decent system. You have to register your key but after that, with a user name and a password you can top up in seconds...

Yes I've gone for that option and it wouldn't let me use it on google chrome, only works on IE for some reason

Its because it uses ActiveX extensions which are propriatary MS format extensions.
BTW, if anyone wants the registry hacks, drop me a line.0 -
Also it will not run with Windows 8 currently. So another thing to be aware of.
Other than that it is totally brilliant. You can top up at almost anytime you want, so no getting in the car and driving miles to find a shop that is still open to do it and you do not need to pay in cash.
And if you know a price rise is pending you can top up extra on your Gas card to £255 and on the Electric key I think it is same, so you have basically bought your energy at current prices as the keys/cards only update the price the first time you top up after any rise has taken place. I saved extra to one side during the summer and put £510 onto the gas meter/card and £131 onto the electric at pre 6% november rises and have only just had to pay new price. The gas lasted me from 15th Nov to 15th Feb - so I had 3 months at old prices. Not bad!0 -
