Of course not, its caused by TAX, TAX and more TAX.0

Right, The market is working well REALLY get over yourselfs. Why is it that when one fuel retailer puts up the price the one down the road does the same so you end up with same price ( PRICE FIXING ). Why is diesel nearly 10ppl difference from unleaded, AFFECTS EVERY THING YOU BUY, yet go to France around 20ppl cheaper um. Some parts of the country charging 15ppl difference to other parts Especially motorway service stations. I for one minuet the report that has come out from the OFT its an insult if you ask me.0

OFT must think the public are complete idiots. I've no idea why this useless excuse of a dept even exists.
Staff in the petrol kiosk of my local Tesco once told me they regularly phone up the Esso 2 mins drive away to find out what it was charging so that Tesco could charge the same.0 -

Yes, Morrisons freely admitted to me they just match what ASDA charge should there be an ASDA nearby.0 -
our local tesco has to charge the same or more than the other local petrol station. It was evidently set as a planning condition for tesco to get a petrol station. These 2 are always at least 5p per litre more than the petrol stations at the next town (16 miles away)0

What a waste of time & money.
We didn't need an investigation, petrol is taxed to the hilt in this country which is the cause and successive governments have done so. It's a self inflicted problem.
We even pay tax on a tax!
It was so damn obvious, like some bloke who whacks a mallet over his head every morning then wonders why he has headache for the rest of the day.0 -

The french charge less fuel duty on diesel.
Motorway service stations typically have massive costs, hence the higher fuel price.
Fuel costs money to transport, the more obscure the location, the likely the price will be higher.0 -
Fuel before tax is no dearer than anywhere else in Europe ......... because the price is fixed by the multi-national cartels.0

The service station has a very small margin...
Hence they will charge what people pay....
It seems most people don't actually care much about price preferring convenience. Even when that convenience is a 10m difference whereas others will happily pay 8p/litre more to put in a fuel containing 'essence of unicorn'.

Main reason TAX
Secondary reason on French autoroutes service stations have to publish their fuel prices and they are put on boards with distance to travel to that station. An enforced petrolprices.com
Not to mention the alternatives to driving are much cheaper/faster and more reliable....
In the UK London to say Manchester is (depending on your car) cheaper by car, not much difference in time and reliability of either (traffic jams or rail problems) an issue.
In France, Paris-Marseille = 300km, price on TGV is way less than by car and time is way less than by car.
The British Isles are also (clue in the name) Islands, if you don't like French prices you can drive to another country, obviously with diminishing returns depending WHERE in France you live! Some parts of the country charging 15ppl difference to other parts Especially motorway service stations. I for one minuet the report that has come out from the OFT its an insult if you ask me.
Also these variations are quite local....in many (not all areas like highlands) putting a 20 mile radius in petrollprices.com isn't that different to a national average.
Mostly it seems if the system isn't working its mainly down to apathy.0 -
The other point i wish to make is what is the point of the oft. This is clearly all one sided.0
