Anyone fancy joining me in a challenge.. Champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget

Hello everyone. I've not been here for a while, but I have decided to start a challenge for myself, and wondered if anyone would like to join me.
I'm calling it Champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget because I heard the phrase recently and it made me smile that somebody thought it was not possible or wise, but I reckon we know better
Otherwise known as the half priced life diet, which I'm sure people here have done before and/or better than me, but everyone starts somewhere...
My aim is simple (but terrifying if I think about it too much)... to eat and drink for 50% or less of the retail price, every shop, for 9/10 of the products I buy.
Rules:
No spending more than 50% of normal retail price on >90% of all items. Bonus points for 100% shops.
Allowed ways of achieving this:
Short datereductions/whoopsies etc
BOGOF and similar offers
Things sold in £1 shops which are normally soldat more than twice that value
Homemade (if you can make it for less than 50% of retail price)
Home grown (if the cost of growing it is less than 50% of the price)
Groupon, living social, money off coupons all allowed
I'm going to start with going through May like this on all my groceries and health care products (I think the latter terrifies me most!) but might extend it to the end of the year.
Is anyone up for joining me? :j

Notes about me and additional requirements of mine for this challenge which may not be applicable to other people:
Try to avoid too much processed food. I'm eating "Paleo" style as much as possible.. which is basically fruit and veg, meat and oils. which I am kinda failing at because of temptation of cakes at the moment!!
I'm going to be staying away from grains as much as possible, they just don't agree with me (doesn't stop me wanting cake...!)
I'm not too sure how I'm going to do things like buying shampoo for 50% less - I already buy Alberto balsam from £1 shops, but I don't think its RRP is much more .. any suggestions here greatly appreciated! At least I don't have to worry about laundry liquid, as I recently bought some eco balls *phew*
Oh, and anything I already have is "free" for the purposes of this experiment
There WILL be times when I break the above code of conductNothing tastes as good as riding a horse feels0 -
Challenge 1: I need my hair cut and coloured. I have a local training salon which will do it for free, but they totally messed it up last time, so won't go back
I used a groupon recently which gave me a voucher to come back for £10 off my next visit. Just trying to work out if it can be used in conjunction with other offers, and which of their offers are the best value to me. Their price card is confusing me no end, as a ladies cut & finish is £25-45, full head of colour from £38, and tuesdays and wednesdays are half price colour with cut and finish (but is that just the colour? Or 1/2 price total bill? Can I use my voucher? Would their £10 colour on a friday offer be better?! I have left them a voicemailNothing tastes as good as riding a horse feels0 -
Hi. I'm not sure I can join your challenge, but I'll watch with interest.
On the shampoo thing: have you tried Mr T's value baby shampoo? Even with the new branding ("Everyday Value" instead of "Value"), it's still only 9p for 500ml. Ditto their baby wash instead of shower gel/liquid soap and baby lotion instead of body lotion. All very cheap and the quality is good.
ETA: Personally, I wouldn't touch Groupon or Living Social or similar sites. (I don't like they way they treat their suppliers. They have been known to break businesses.) Could you try a different hairdressing college?"Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'
It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it - that’s what gets results!
2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge 66 coupons - 23.5 spent.
4 - Thermal Socks from L!dl
4 - 1 pair "combinations" (Merino wool thermal top & leggings)
6 - Ukraine Forever Tartan Ruana wrap
8 - 4 x 100g/450m skeins 3-ply dark green Wool Local yarn
1.5 - sports bra0 -

Hi Pipney, watchers postively encouraged to keep me on track! :rotfl: thanks for the Mr T shampoo suggestion, I have tried Mr S's very cheap baby shampoo, and it was blimmin' 'orribleI do love their cheapo baby lotion though.
I also don't want to feel like I'm scrimping by going for the value range on things which matter to me - hence wanting to feel like I'm living a "champagne" lifestyle but only spending a lemonade budget. I'm perfectly happy to but the value verson of things which don't matter to me (like the body lotion) but my hair is one of the only things I'm a bit precious about!
Interesting opinion of Groupon and similar. I have followed their bad press recently. I work for a restaurant who uses them, and having seen both sides of the argument my opinion is that any company who allows a Groupon deal to make them bankrupt hasn't actually done their homework or in some cases applied much common sense.
First >50% saving mader today - 100% saving on not buying ant killer. We had one or two so I duly wrapped up anything vaguely sugary in the cupboard, wiped everything down and thought no more of it. My normally clean freak housemate left the kitchen bin overflowing last night and on the very top was an empty desert packet, which had attracted them in hoardes. I googled for a solution instead of just going out to buy it, all of the ingredients I already have at home. Basically I'm going to mop the floor with bleach, wipe the surfaces with vinegar (well, probably use a mixture of both on both!) and put talc and neat bleach down where I think they are coming in. Result!
I need to buy loo roll. Might have a google of which supermarkets have offers on at the moment.Nothing tastes as good as riding a horse feels0 -

This is where me & challenges like this shouldn't mix...
My first thought on reading this question was "try to find a more expensive shampoo in the £shop or on offer" - a higher starting price means 50% is easier to achieve if you can get it in the £shop.
Now obviously, if you follow my thinking too much, you could end up spending more - finding a £5 bottle for £2.50 isn't very MSE compared to paying £1 usually. So then its up to you to decide whether the £5 was "worth" that as part of your champagne lifestyle!
See - I always overthink things :rotfl:
Good luck with your challenge. I'll be watching with interest. And keeping the not-so-helpful comments to myself0 -
Solastin - :rotfl:
I included a good debate about £5 shampoos in my first reply, edited a bit cos it was a bit long and over-thinky, and edited a bit more to remove it completely - but I basically said exactly the same as you!
ETA: perhaps for the sake of a £1 bottle (which I love dearly and have no desire to change, having found a brand which is cheap AND leaves my hair really nice) I should say shampoo is exempt from the challenge!Nothing tastes as good as riding a horse feels0 -
skint slimmer i will join with you on this thread i do probably spend way more than the average person on luxury items so this should help me i am also on the caveman diet at the moment although my weekness is cakes ohhh and chocolate lol
although i must say i am rubbish at spelling so if you dont mind that i would love to join in with you0 -
Am another one watching this thread with interest, but would like to make a couple of points:
- Groupon and the like are not offering anything luxurious, the offers are on cut-price services and I agree with PipneyJane about their ethics (or lack of).
- you can end up spending more than you would otherwise have intended if you go mad on dscounted toiletries, as there's always something better round the corner (new hair products etc)
I've spent the last 18 weeks running everything down, and using up what I have. It feels far more satisfying than spending on bargains!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I'm probably not in a position to join in as I have 6 other people to cater for, and some have allergies/sensitivities which makes shopping economically for them a bit of logistical challenge as it is! But could I put in a plea, on behalf of anyone else who joins in & has access to them, to allow things bought in street/farmer's markets? I've picked up so many brilliant bargains from ours (which is both) including, recently, a sack (12.5Kg) of organic parsnips for £1, as they get towards the end of the weekend & just need to clear the stall, and the prices are regularly much lower than our two local supermarkets. We've been living a champagne-ish lifestyle on a lemonade budget for years, thanks to our local stallholders!Angie - GC Jun 25: £309.06/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

Well, i think a lot of the time dh and i do live champagne lifestyle on a budget.
I think the shampoo scenario shows why the percentage thing doesn't necessarily work. E.g. I do use more expensive conditioner (don't use shampoo very often at all as i follow a mainly conditioner only hair routine) and i use expensive hair products. I have tried cutting down and i don't get the same results. But, i can get myconditiner at tk max every now and again, so thats what i do. I have a few bottles of cheaper ones i use if i run out before dh or i see one i like better at tk max. Same with hair products. If i am not going out i use up the cheaper hair products teying new techniques to see if i get better results, or just put my hair up those days.
We eat excellent food, because dh sometimes takes a work break at about the time the big name food halls close and grabs whoopsies, and our freezer is packed with expensive food we have paid a fraction of the price for. Although if someone can think of a way to convince dh not to buy more cheese i will be grateful....
I think one of the things about 'champagne lifestyle products' is ypu get sure about your purchase and you buy it ONCE, rather than working through cheaper alternatives upgrading and spending more.
Also, patience. I would rather wait a couple of years for the lamp/machine/whatever is not something with a sell by date that i want than get a compromise or pay over the odds.
And knowing where top compromise is the hardest thing i think. E.g. We live in a house that is practically a wreck, but we will never out grow it, and neve NEED to move, we saved all our adult lives to buy it, and are now doing the same to make it more luxurious, but there are compromises we will and will not make. This year we are having some structual work done, to create a new kitchen and (whoohoo) and indoor loo, But we will not be able to afford the kitchen we want for some time. We could get a cheaper one and make do with it or make do with it for ten years or so, but whata waste! Instead we re using furniture we have, some antique gun chests and cupboards that don't really fit well elsewhere in our house, and some odds and sods paired with some ply board shelving and reusing an old sink unit. Originally we were going to move the pld kitchen units over, but they are too far gone to survive a move.....they are at least thirty years old, and would last longer in situ, but the room they are in is falling down, lol. We would rather have an unconventional kitchen for a few years than 'waste' money and resources on a kitchen we do not love and that sometime in the fifty or so years we might live here we will want to replace.
bUT in the otherhand, our bedroom and sitting rom depress me as i feel i have no refuge from the Wreck and ruin, and so we have started by painting the bedroom and we have ancient and deifnitely faded glory old silk curtains i will replace, but only when i find the right fabric. I am orepared to spend LOTS on fabric, but save money by making the curtains myself, (with interlining so i can save on heating bills, when we have heating, lol). Similarly, i know the fabric i want for the sitting room, and its a lot, so i wait for a sale, bag it a bit more cheaply. We will decorate the sitting room over winter (or summer if this weather continues and we are confined to the house on summer weekends) and it will be in the knowledge, unlike the kitchen, it will need to be redone in the future, but the curtains will stay and just things we cannot do ourselves when we tart it up a little done.
We do not have heating, because the money was needed elsewhere instead of our heating system. My mother reminds me that most people who live in great piles cannot afford to heat them too, so i feel we are living the champagne lifestyle NOT being able to afford to heat our house this year.
I would rather produce a pn amazing meal for less overall with some lux or full price ingrediants and some very very cheap ones, than produce a good but not outstanding meal where everything was fifty percent off. Price might be the same, but to me more often than not its neither lemonaid nor champagne a resultmore a nice bottle of wine result.. Similarly, i would rather eat very ionexpensively five days a week to eat a little more luxuriously once or twice a week.
Good luck finding your lemonade budget champagne lifestyle!0
