Leaving university

I'm currently in year 2 of a 3year course but I've not been able to cope with this year and really feeling I need to leave.
There is a chance I'll be sorting that all out next month but I'm just wondering where I stand with my final student finance payment I'm just about to receive, will I have to pay any of that back or will it just go onto to why I will pay when I begin earning?
I do get loan and grant

Re the payment you are about to receive(or have just received ) if you are planning to leave in the next month or so my understanding is that the grant will be recalculated based on weeks studied and any 'extra' will need to be repaid( to my best understanding) immediately.
I am assuming the loan would be expected to be repaid too, what I am not sure about is whether they would ask for an immediate repay or whether you would still be entitled to repay as per your original terms and conditions(due to fact that degree wasn't completed)
There are too many sub paragraphs in the regs for me to fathom it outHopefully someone more knowledgeable wil be along to clarify.

Are you doing a course that has any realistic prospect of leading to employment ?
Or is it a vanity degree ?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Wouldn't it be possible for you to finish the year?0

You would be expected to pay back the latest installment payment straight away. The rest of it would roll onto normal student loan deduction -but honestly if there is any way you can grit your teeth and get through to the end of the year and pass you should do it-as you can defer after that and have a lot more choices. For example you could transfer credit to either another uni (often for a different course) or even to the OU. If you drop out now -you will likely be credited only with your first year of study whereas last it out and you can still complete your degree (up to five years) later on once you've sorted whatever is stopping you, decided on another course etc and get your fees paid. You'll still have "a year of fees" left whereas if you go now you'll need 2 years to graduate so likely need to fund the one year of fees (currently up to £9K) yourself.
If there is any way to finish this year (literally a couple of months now) it would be wiser. You could take a year or two out of education and then return with just one year to complete and be funded for it.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Totally agree but would add that it would be financially simpler to finish the year even if s/he's going to fail.0 -
My advice would be just don't leave. Uni isn't that hard at all. I'm at the final week of 3 years worth of effort - late nights up at 3-4am for several weeks running now and its nowhere near as hard as having a real job.
Whether you enjoy it or not right now isn't the point, once you have it you'll have a much better employment outlook in life (assuming its a decent degree) and you will regret leaving in the long run.
You're thinking you have "1 year" left - a semester is about 12. You're looking at 24 weeks where only 8 or so of them involve any actual work. Why would you throw that away?
Not shouting you down, hoping you'll see what you'd be throwing away. If you're having trouble at home your uni will support you. My uni have helped me with money, helped my friends with extensions, helped others move modules around. Universities are judged by their retention of students so chances are whatever is making you want to leave is supported by one service or another, it is seriously worth trying to find a way to make things easier for yourself and then struggling through. Come this time in 2013 you'll be thinking how glad you are that you're right at the end of it all!0 -
Hi thanks for the replies greatly appreciated :-)
I'm doing psychology which is a very hard course and this past year has been so hard for me as I'm a mature student with 3 kids, I also suffer with dyspraxia and at times depression great I'm studying myself there lol
I'm trying to stick out this current year as ATM trying to get a report done but I know I will not be able o sit the exams as not done any revision and missed so many lectures :-s as been rather ill since just before Christmas.
I will get in to see my personal tutor as soon as I can and see what he can suggest I'm hoping he can help me to possibly resit this year based on health reasons
Been told by my dr to see the uni first and if she needs to do a letter for me she willI love War Of The Worlds:heart2:

Most students wont have revised till the week before at mostmy wife has a Masters in Psychology so I know how you feel re the course difficulty. You can do it though! Well worth sticking it out and just leaning on the university as much as possible. They can move modules around and all sorts if you have the right reasons, some people on my course just do 1 module at a time over x months and whilst their course will be longer than mine they'll get the job done in the end. Way better than just dropping out unnecessarily.
All the best!0 -
Best advice? DONT QUIT! You're more than half way through. You are almost there! You are near the end of year 2. Don't drop out, finish it and then take a break. Maybe return to finish third year later.0
