Getting new meter

hi guys just wondering how many of you with solar panels have your meters running backwards and whether you have been able to get you meter changed yet. I had my system fitted in early november and it caused my meter to run backwards. After a few e-mails to NPower they have arranged for a engineer to come to replace the meter. Once my e-mail had got to the right department they seem to have been quick and efficient at making a appointment that was suitable for myself. so credit where credit is due. I was initially told by the firm that fitted the panels that I would be charged. this doesnt seem to be the case. Any one any experience?. Im hoping it might have import export readings?.

You may have to pay a small monthly fee for a smart meter that monitors import and export - worth checking maybe?

They may also try to charge you for the units you exported, since those were bought at 3.1p, but you also got them taken off your bill, via backwards meter. Since you were quick to chase, and Winter, doubt they could prove you owe anything.

  • My meter was changed over pretty quick - although I did have a few problems along they way. Don't think they normally charge - I was informed that the smart meters have not been mass rolled out yet?

I believe there was some problems with the initial trail instalations of the smart meters (The government wanted a standard meter across all electric companies). As a result there is now a consultation going on until late next year when a standard can be set. Although I suspect its more to do with money.
  • Why not ask the engineer (before he comes) - can you have an import/export meter.

    Might cost you something.

I'm curious why you would want to "get your meter changed". If you inform the supplier and they don't take any action then I wouldn't chase it up repeatedly as it is then down to them to check or resolve.

I'm aware of someone who has had panels for over 12 months and has informed their supplier but so far nothing has happened to replace the meter.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

    nice 'morale' compass...
  • I notified nPower last March when my system was installed and after a couple of months the engineers came and changed my main fuse (why I don't know). They returned after another couple of months and changed the meter. There was no charge. nPower don't actually do the work, it is contracted out.
  • I informed my supplier OVO after i realised my dial meter was tracking backwards.

They say it is faulty which it is not and they want to charge me £30.00 to replace it.

Can they do this? Got no chance of me paying for this work as it in effect benefits them and not me.

    Honesty eh?

What supplier you with confuseddad?. I was told when I had the panels fitted that there would be a charge since the electric meter will be changed by a independant company. However after a bit of work trying to get them out the work has been done with no charge being made, at no point had NPower asked for money neither. If your with NPower then I did it by contacting there solar fitting department and getting them to transfer my e-mail to there meter changing department. If you try it the standard route you just get bogged down in customer service.

Our meter was over 23 years old when we had panels fitted last October, so we suspected it could go backwards.

When we filled in the forms it asked for details of the meter so we expected EDF would realise it was old and arrange to change it. However we never heard from them.

In January we sent an e mail to their customer correspondence address stating that we had panels fitted and specifically saying that we thought the meter could go backwards, they immediately responded and the meter was eventually changed.

No charge, and it only took 20 minutes.
