Charity shop 7 days return period

Options
I need an advise.
I bought couple of thing in a Charity shop the items are brand new with labels. This was bought for my kid whowasn`t present with me, but I was assured by the till lady that I can bring it any time with my till receipt.
I have brought it back after two weeks as the shop is far from where I live.
I was told that their policy is 7 days return and it is on the counter. The counter note was covered at the time of buy.
It does say on the receipt too , which I didn`t notice.

All I wanted to know is this legal as all the shops I know of have 28 day return policy.
Are they wrong to do their own little policies?
Any one has any helpfull info, please?

As far as I am am aware shops have no obligation to give refunds - many do for PR reasons, but only have to if the item is faulty and not fit for purpose.
If it is on the receipt then I would say you have been clearly informed of their returns policy. Sorry.

Legally shops only have the obligation to give refunds or replacements when a product is faulty, anything else is optional and discretionary. :)

As others have said, you don't have a legal right to return the items.

However, could you go back to the shop when the assistant who served you is there? She may be willing to bend the rules a little.

Alternatively you could donate the items to the shop and think of it as a charity donation. Or eBay them. :)
  • I'd second ebaying them, since they're BNWT they could well fetch the same amount.

Customers have a statutory right to a remedy when a product is faulty.

If the shop assistant says at the time of sale "bring it back at anytime for a refund", that statement then becomes part of the sales contract. It is a contractual right which is enforcible in law.

Of course, there now becomes the problem of proving that the sales assistant did say that.

The only 'optional and discretionary' bit is the shop's choice to offer that type of returns policy.

I had a similar situation when i bought a new item from a shop, and the assistant assured me i could have a refund if unsuitable. When I returned it,they said I could only have an exchange.I asked to speak to the Manager and explained this item was no use to me and I rarely shopped there so a credit note was no use.The manager gave me a refund.
