bristol for a weekday lunch

we are spending a week in Bath over Christmas and then, before going home, dropping my daughter off in Bristol as she is flying to Dublin. We thought we would have a look around and some lunch before leaving her to her own devices to while away the rest of the day before the flight.
We dont know Bristol, we wont particularly want the sales, should we wander around the town centre, try and get on a guided walk, go and see the suspension bridge etc? We would like to make the most of our time weather permitting. also can anyone suggest somewhere for lunch eg a restaurant wth a set price menu or good food that isnt arm and a leg - other than seafood, anything goes!
many thanks. Hilary

We like The Spyglass, which is a boat on Welsh Back in the city centre. Informal atmosphere and *excellent* food. Main courses £6-£9 ish.
They have a website www.spyglassbristol.co.uk0 -
No offence but you do realise that Bristol airport is not actually in Bristol? It is about 6/7 miles out and from Bath it is quicker to go across country through the Chew Valley, but maybe she is getting a coach/taxi from Bristol to the airport.
However back to your question i would second the Spyglass as it is a really nice reasonable restaurant and Floating Harbour/Welsh Back is also really nice to have a wander round. Severn Shed is also supposed to be nice and Mud dock is also nice - both are on the floating harbour. You can also do a guided tour of Medieval Bristol from the Corn Exchange which is within walking distance. You can also walk up Park Street which has lots of lovely shops.
Otherwise you could venture up to Clifton Village which is nice to look round although I can't recommend anywhere to eat.0 -
A good walk is around floating harbour. Some good options around but I've had lunch at Graze Bar and Chophouse and also at the Grain Barge which is actually a boat. If you walk around then Brunel Buttery is useful stop for tea n bacon butty0

thanks everyone some good replies here and excellent ideas.
We thought about spending the day in Bristol because we dont know it and it would be interesting to have a bit of an explore and we have day free however I hadnt looked yet at a map and if its easier to go via the Chew Valley then maybe we will rethink. We are going to be staying in a cottage in Wellow outside of Bath, at the moment I am a bit depressed as not sure we will even be able to get there on Thursday if the present weather continues - we live in Essex, the worst of snow is over here but from what I gather the area around Bath is practically obliterated by latest lot of snow!
If we should drive via the countryside, Chew Valley, any good pub on the way?
I would love to live in or around Bristol it seems an amazing place!

We live just outside of Bristol (Portishead), the local area has been hit quite badly with snow, although I dont think we are particularly expecting too much more. The main roads should be cleared but if you were to try going the chew valley way I think you would hit some problems as that is windy little country roads. Bristol Airport is not actually in Bristol but it is not difficult to get into Bristol on the main A38. There are so many things to do in Bristol, the suspension bridge is lovely and maybe a look around Clifton Village, some lovely shops there (expensive, but nice to browse) there are plenty of places to eat in Clifton, just depends what you want, if you go into Clifton you will see places everywhere. You could also walk down Park Street from Clifton into the city centre, there are also open top bus tours, although you might need a warm coat!! Hope you get here and have fun xMummy to 4 beautiful but expensive children

Spyglass will now close for it's annual Winter Break from 23rd December 2010 until 1st March 201?
From the website.War does not determine who is right - only who is left.0 -
kivsy - you are in the same place as me!
We've eaten at The Princes Motto in Barrow Gurney which is just off the A38, about 5 mins from the airport. A really olde world type pub with proper pub food as opposed to gastro stuff. Had a really nice cheese omelette and homemade chips when we ate there.0 -

The Chew Valley is beautiful so well worth a drive through on the way to the airport and the you can take the scenic route stopping at Chew Valley Lake on the way back. Nice pubs in this area include the Pony & Trap and the Bear and Swan in Chew Magna, the Carpenters Arms in Stanton Wick and the Chew Valley Tea Rooms which has lovely views over the lake.
That said Bristol is also well worth a visit even if you aren't going there via the airport.
I think I must have commented on your post on another thread and I hope it didn't worry you but at that point the weather was pretty bad here. I live very close to Wellow, about 3 miles away and the roads here aren't actually that bad anymore, they have improved a lot since Monday. The main roads are absolutely fine and by now I would imagine Wellow will be perfectly accessible, it has a well used road through it so by now it should be clear if only due to the volume of traffic using it. Why don't you give the Fox and Badger a call and see what they say about the roads in the area, I am sure they would be happy to tell you whether they are passable?
Hope you have a lovely time:D0
