Plumber Call Out charge - is £45 about right?

Options
Hi all,

Have a problem with my sisters boiler. At times it seems to heat up the central heating but not produce hot water through the taps.

Rang a plumber and its £45 call out charge.

Is this a fair price for Leicester?
Also, once he quotes on the work to fix the problem should I be expecting the £45 to be knocked off the quote especially if he can do the job there and then?

Finally, any ideas of what the problem could be?

Thanx

AMO

The callout charge typically includes an hour's labour if it can be done straightaway - but if he has to come back/order parts then it's not creditted against a future occasion.

£45 doesn't sound too bad - though I have no knowledge of Leicester.

If its a combi boiler then its likely to be the diverter valve in the boiler itself.

if its a storage cylinder then its likely to be the two port motorised valve thats gone u/s

£45 is not unrealistic, I charge £35 for first half an hour then £35 per hour after (derby/nottingham) if I have to come back to fix the prob then that is at £35/hr as I have already charged for the initial first half hour.

Or I charge a job rate to fix agreed with the customer

Or I charge for per hour with a fixed upper limit

It all depends on the job, the customer and what can be the dark art of trying to predict the impossible, and for all you trades out there you know what I mean.

I find this post to be [STRIKE]absolute nonsense[/STRIKE] quite confusing. Quite clearly, the vast majority of call outs for plumbers are faulty tamping waffles, the remainder are for sticky gudgeon pins.

P.S, I have never attended a broken combi where the fault was a fan, APS, blocked HEX, scaled plate HEX, flow switch, thermister, PCB, diaphragm, gas valve, loss of pressure, blocked AAV, reversed polarity, time switch, room thermostat, blocked injectors, blocked condensate, pump and I never expect to.

Not in Leicester, but that's roughly what I pay my tried and tested plumber for his minimum call out rate.

    Dear Elite

If you dont know what a diverter valve is in a combi boiler (and you are in the trade) then do you want me to explain?

The OP just wanted some advice on what (maybe) was wrong

I could have said "your not getting any hot water at times so its not being heated!"

However my comment was merely intended to be what normally goes wrong with that issue. I could have gone on to say "is the controller time clock set up properly"

However first he needs to tell us what system he has

I am expecting a reply back from the OP something like "whats a combi boiler" or "whats a two port valve" Maybe he knows those things and comes back saying " I have a combi boiler whats a diverting valve"

AS you well know fault diagnosis online is fraut with subtle complexities, it may be there is more than one fault and one masks the other until......

It may be that the person describing the fault is not describing it properly leading to miss diagnosis and wasted time

What my advice to the OP maybe should have been call out a plumber for £45 per hour and get him to look at it, the price seems reasonable, but instead I answered his question as to "any ideas with whats wrong?" with a first educated guess.

Anything wrong with that? If he doesn't understand my statement then he needs to get in a competent plumber (at £45 per hour) to diagnose the problem..........

    All roads lead to Rome;)

sounds fairly resonable, but try to find someone who is recommend with a free call out . we have insurance through british gas ( home serve i think ) it a monthly charge but we then don't pay for anything else on top. we've never had to pay a call out or for any parts. plus it 24 hour call. doesn't you your sister now i appreciate. but might be somethign to consider for later on.

I found the post by Found true love helpful and easy to understand, and I'm a housewife who knows nothing about boilers. Once someone gives you an idea what the problem could be, it is then quite easy to do an online search about it, to make it easier to understand.
I had the same problem with my combi boiler a couple of weeks ago and it was the diverter valve that had gone.

    Thank you Sue.

I just had a lucky guess (lol) thats what experience is all about but, just because its normally that you cant presume it always is!

Still you have got to start to help somewhere........
