beware of EDF's latest doorstep tricks
Options
we just had a gentleman on our doorstep with an electronic gadget and he implied he was going to read our meter.. he didnt actually say he was he just said he wanted to talk about our latest meter reading. he said that he had noticed that our neighbours were all on lower tarrifs than we were and was wondering if there was a reason for it. it was utter rubbish. he tapped his electronic gizmo rather a lot and tutted about us needing to change as soon as possible. i took his name and his company and informed him i would be advertising his companies new sales techniques. i am not old or vulnerable nor am i stupid and we are on top of our energy suppliers so we are not a push over but some people are.. i know no one on this site is either [after all we found our way here to make sure of that] but let everyone you know about this latest tactic just in case they aren't members of martins crusaders.

This exactly mirrors the experience I had with Southern Electric0

He didn't take a note of your meter No did he?? thet's the scam going around at the moment then the next thing you know isin a few months time you have switched companies without you knowing it.0 -
I'm confused by robt7893's post - surely no company is going to switch you over without payment details ?? A few year ago this was happening but I thought the process had been cleaned up- also the previous company will phone/write/email with a message like"sorry you're leaving us"- I've had a stream of emails from Scot Power in the last few days asking me if I'm sure I want to leave after agreeing a switch.
Also ,as I have posted recently, many modern houses have meter boxes mounted externally so if having the meter numbers alone worked ,the scam could be carried out without even knocking.0 -

No payment details needed for quarterly billing, so the rogue salesman sign you up to pay quarterly.
Agree though that most suppliers now contact customers when changing so it shouldnt be so much of an issue now but I'm sure that wont stop the doorknockers!Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
WARNING DOORSTEP SCAMMERS
We had Scottish Power/Energy knocking on door last might.
We are in Reading.
2 guys at the door.
Usual stuff about neighbours on lower tarriff - can we see you bill? - Can we see your meter/
We answeed 'NO' and they said 'Pleeeaaase'.
THEY HAD BIG YELLOW KEYS ROUND THEIE NECKS - for opening externally sited meters.
They were racist - because we would not supply the information they wanted and sometimes didn't reply at all, they asked, with a sneer, if we were Polish.
They made remarks about 'too many foreigners'.
WE GAVE THEM NO INFORMATION.
It took a few tries to finish the conversation and we eventually just said 'goodbye' and shut the door on them.0
