Painting sliding wardrobe doors

Options
Hi to everyone, don't we all just love this web site - Thanks Martin and to all that contribute.

I have metal sliding wardrobe doors, you know the ones from Homebase or B&Q. I want to re-vamp them, they are cream and have faded etc with age.

I was wondering if I could just paint them, any suggestions ? has anyone ever painted theirs ? Cheers .....

Just lightly sand them and apply a couple of coats of under coat and sand between coats and then apply your top coat.

If the finish is melamine, then use a suitable primer first & you should get a pretty decent finish. Satinwood or eggshell paint would both give good results for the top coat.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I too have these sliding wardrobe doors but mine are all mirrored and on two bedroom walls  (don't even go there , they were here when we moved in and I hate them) any suggestions what I could do to change the appearance without actually throwing them in a skip.? Can't afford to change the whole thing either......
The painting idea sounds good but don't think I could paint over mirrors..

You can get paint that goes on glass and mirrors. Not a great selection but we bought some a while back to cover a glass door for privacy. I think it was a spray paint. You can buy it from the main DIY stores.

About the original question for painting metal doors.

I think you can use a magnet to check if they are ferrous. That will determine which undercoat to use.

Thanks guys for the replies. Will have to find a magnet to see if they are ferrous, and I'm not sure if the surface of the doors is Melamine. They look and feel like a Vinyl/silky type finish.

Tanith, I know how you feel about these doors, I can't afford to change the whole lot either ! BUT whilst I was searching the net about these doors I came across a web site that showed you how to "etch" and "frost" the mirror doors, the pictures looked fantatsic .. I will find the site for you.

Tanith, Is this any help ....... If you don't have the time or inclination to replace the doors however, what about applying stencils to the mirrored surface using an etching spray? There are non-permanent etching sprays and varnishes on the market that give the illusion of etched or sandblasted glass and are quite hardwearing, and can be easily removed if you fancy a change.

Alternatively try a specialist permanent etching cream that does actually etch the glass. The Stencil Library sells both the non-permanent etching varnish and the permanent etching cream by mail order. They also have all sorts of designs to cover just about every taste from traditional to contemporary. For example, a more traditional, delicate design could be chosen to imitate the pattern found on a Venetian mirror (e.g. AD1 Adam border No. 1). Or you could stencil one of their new geometric modern designs in an all-over repeat for a more contemporary look (e.g. MD36 Beads or MD 45 Squares). If you love florals, they have some stunning bird and blossom stencils in their Japanese range (e.g. JA114, JA117) that would look beautiful randomly placed across some of the glass. They also have borders, panels, repeats or motifs that could be used on doors as well as other surfaces so the same pattern could be used on the mirrored doors and then carried over onto walls and furniture. Take a look at all 3,500 stencils in stock by visiting The Stencil Library website.

Fruitpie, you could also use wallpaper on the metal doors - use border adhesive if you think ordinary wallpaper paste won't be strong enough.

My sliding doors are mirrored (like Tanith's) but with bronze tinted glass, so you can't even see your reflection properly - worse still is that I bought them myself 25 years ago so I don't even have an excuse - I even took them with me when I moved house (!!). I think the only thing that will make them look better is if I saw them smashed to bits in a skip.

Made me laugh when I read about your Bronze tinted mirrors....... be glad you can't see yourself very well , imagine getting out of bed in the morning and seeing yourself and dh reflected many times before you get a chance to even put your dressing gown on... dh and I always sleep in the buff by the way ..... its not a pretty sight....
I would love to be able to throw them in a skip but as I said earlier its an expense that I cannot justify just at present....
