Travelodge Overbooking

How can Travelodge get away with their 'overbooking' policy ?
We booked in January, and paid for, two rooms at an Edinburgh Travelodge for Saturday 11 April. Arrived there mid day, too early to check in but the receptionist took our booking details. Went into the city for the rest of the day. On our arrival back at the hotel at 9pm, were told that 'there were no rooms available, but they had managed to find us some in Livinston, twenty miles away' After a somewhat 'heated' discussion we had no alternative other than to use the Livinston Hotel.
With four adults and two very young tired children, I found this utterley appalling. The receptionist told us this 'had happened every night that week' I got the impression that we should be grateful that they had found us somewhere else!
This was not just a 'reservation' it was an actual booking. Travelodge took our money at the time of booking three months ago.
Could this be classed as 'fraud' They have taken our money under 'false pretences'

What do the booking T&C say. Did they compensate you for travelling an extra 20 miles?

Did they pay for a taxi?

I believe most hotels operate this kind of policy, as long as they rectify it at no cost to the customer it shouldn't be too bad.

However, the fact that you arrived and confirmed that you are intending to stay, and then letting out your room is poor. With the TL policy of not taking your luggage in, there is little else you can do to secure your room.

I can only suggest that you write to the sleepy hollow address - don't bother with emails or try to call.

Am in process of finding out the name of the Travelodge chairman. Once I have that I will write to him (to his home address that I should be able to find).
I used to work for an electronics company, any complaints that the MD received directly were taken very seriously, especially if followed up by a small claims court summons!

I think thats terrible service!!!! I complained to Travelodge about a really terrible stay we had at a travelodge - when we complained at the time not even the manager was interested but when we got home I went to the top and within a couple of weeks I had a phone call, an apology and all our money refunded for our trip.

shocking treatment, presumably someone turned up willing to pay full cost.We booked MGM in Vegas and on arrival they tried to move us to a lesser hotel because 'they were fully booked'but we point blank refused.
Guess what,we got our room, prob a common tactic

from the t&c on the travelodge website.
    1. Relocation
      1. Travelodge operates a relocation policy (for more details on relocation policy click here). If a room is unavailable on arrival (except due to an event beyond our reasonable control, (see section 11.2)) then, we will either:
        • provide a room in another Travelodge hotel and pay the reasonable cost of transport to that alternative hotel or any applicable car park charges and provide you with breakfast at no additional charge; OR
        • at your request, or, if in our reasonable opinion there is no suitable alternative hotel accommodation available, cancel your Booking and refund you the money you have paid for the unavailable room(s) including related extras.
