We get a lot of new sellers who want a quick guide to staying safe on ebay so this is a standard template post. Feel free to discuss it and to make suggestions about adding more vital tips. If new users have any specific questions then please just start a new thread and the regulars will try and help.
Start from here to set buyer requirements to exclude overseas bidders or bidders with NPB strikes etc as per your preference.
You can also block individual bidders if you want, this is useful if you get a serious of strange questions or if any bidder makes you uneasy, just pop them on your blocked bidders list. If the bidder has already bid you can cancel their bid and then block them from bidding further.
You can offer cash on collection for items but cannot refuse paypal if offered, you can't even say 'you prefer cash on collection'. Some experienced sellers do allow paypal on collection, but they may well have their own security for ensuring that even though they will lose a paypal claim they have enough ID to make a claim against buyer in the small claims court. For a newer or smaller seller this might not be possible, so be aware of this scam, and possibly even consider selling collected items elsewhere.
For smaller items a certificate of postage available for free from the Post office will cover up to £46 of loss whether in the UK or abroad.
To be covered by paypal the only address to use is the one that paypal confirm in the box 'Ok to send to' no other address will be covered, the ebay address is immaterial.

- Set seller preferences very tight:

- NOTE: All sellers must offer paypal on all listings apart from the car and vehicle categories. You will need a paypal premier account to sell and charges will be taken from each payment.
- Paypal on collection scam

Thanks for the info.
I have contacted Ebay and they say to contact the seller to cancel the sale.
So I have asked them to cancel the purchase so that I do not incur sellers fees.0 -

'You can offer cash on collection for items but cannot refuse paypal if offered, you can't even say 'you prefer cash on collection'. '

'I know people always say you can't ask for it (cash) but on eBay's help pages they give you the right to request payment on collection and that you can specify cash.'
From eBay help page-
Payment on collection
How soon am I paid? Immediately. In-person payment methods can include cheques, postal orders, cash, PayPal, or credit card. In your listing, be clear about which of these payment methods you’ll accept.
'You'll notice as well that with 'payment on collection' they don't specify that you must offer Paypal - just that you have to be clear about which you'll accept.'0 -

eBay requires all sellers who list on eBay.co.uk to offer payments through PayPal, with the exception of listings in certain categories.
Policy
eBay requires all sellers listing on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie to accept PayPal in their listings with the exception of listings in the categories of cars, motorcycles, aircraft, boats, caravans, trailers, trucks (commercials), services and property categories. Sellers listing on eBay.ie are currently exempt from this requirement, but must offer PayPal in their listings if they wish them to appear in search on eBay.co.uk or eBay.ie. In most cases, other additional payments options, which are currently permitted onsite, may also be provided.
Sellers who list in certain categories or transactions may additionally be required to offer PayPal as the only payment method offered on a listing, and this will be messaged accordingly within the listing flows.
Misleading & Discouraging Payments
Sellers who state in their listing that they accept certain payment methods must not selectively offer those payment methods to buyers or discourage buyers from using those payment methods.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
