I want to relocated my front door. Do I need planning permission?

I want to relocate my front door, in order to relocate and enlarge the downstairs wc space. At the moment, it's too dark and cramp.

But this means I need to relocate my front door to my garage conversion, just a few steps to my left, which is now a study/ hallway/ store usage.

This move effectively makes the front door space into "a wall with a circular window" in it to add light, and it's small landing part of the wc space.

Anybody move thier front door before? What does it entails? I assume I will need planning permission to do so?

Advise is much appreciated. Thanks.

Best Regards,
Sharon

  • I don't think you'd need planning permission, but you would need to comply with building regulations.

Speak to your local planning/building department at the council (they are usually happy to give advice and send out information) and tell them your plans. You can also send photos/sketches to them with a letter describing your plans. If the work sounds OK to them in principle, then you can go ahead and have it done - then pay them to come out and assess. If it passes the assessment then they will issue you a certificate of compliance.

By what you describe, I think their main concern would be regarding fire regulations and having adequate access to the front exit door.
  • Thanks Mexicanwaver, will send hubby to the local planning department.
