I point to post #6 as why you shouldn't give away your right of silence.

And why would you have the right not to speak to a policeman but have to do so to a hector without his oyster card reader?

Seems you have have a chip on your shoulder re Ticket Inspectors. Noithing in your postings have added anything of value to this thread.

How come you accuse me of that?

(And how rude to say a poster's contributions (some "thanked"!) are worthless)

#6 doesn't give any details of this situation ever occuring. I doubt anyone that has been travelling legally, and answered honestly has had to 'settle out of court' for anything.

just search one of the many foamers forums im sure u will find many a tale of guilty fare dodgers asking for out of court settlements but u will also find tales of honest travelers who panicked when intimidated by revenue staff and say the wrong things. they too are requiring out of court settlements
I can't even think of any question that could be asked that could lead to court action based on the answer given!

    Can you enlighten me?

    revenue staff r well trained not only to be patronising/intimidating but also how to use loaded questions to secure a conviction. heres one of my favorite questions;

'so sir if I hadnt of stopped you today how would you have paid for your tickets?'

wot ever answer u give to this question leads to the next loaded question on their training flowchart. a very easy way to prove intent which leads to a criminal prosecution

if they cant prove intent then its a byelaw offence which is a civil matter therefore no criminal record or enhanced crb record ;)

    Nothing to do with manners.

    (Why the unnecessary personal abuse?)

This thread was started after the op came against an ill mannered hector!

Hector's are not known for their manners anyway, but by answering unnecessarily you give away your rights.

They are supposed to be checking the card has been swiped in, and it's not the passenger's fault if they cannot!

It's bad manners for a train guard to ask what station you're getting off?

The reason people are moaning at you about it is because people who do what you are suggesting are invariably rude and incredibly annoying to talk to. Like someone else on here who had a rant because someone in the bank filled a gap with some small-talk that was "none of their business" instead of just sitting there in awkward silence...

They of course have the right to not tell people anything, but equally the rest of the population have the right to judge and question them over it.

Anything the train companies can do to prevent fare evasion is OK with me. So if they ask me a question, I'm perfectly happy to answer.

Once or twice, I've been caught with the wrong ticket. I've paid the fine accordingly. I know the rules, if I have the wrong ticket, I pay the fine.

All this nonsense about not answering legitimate queries from ticket inspectors is completely bizarre.

Indeed. Buy the correct ticket for your journey before you travel. Get on the correct train. Get off at the correct station. Not exactly rocket science, is it?

I don't know why you want further "enlightenment"

The OP was accosted by an ill mannered hector, who asked an unneccessary question then rudely walked off.

I just (correctly) pointed out that we do not have to engage in a conversation with hectors.

Another poster pointed out a real danger in conversing with them, hence me pointing you at #6!!

It seems to me the op was asked a perfectly sensible question, to ascertain they were on the correct train.

Not all passengers do or know the limits of their card / tickets. I do not know where ill mannered hector comes in?

She asked the question and left, how can you walk off rudely? perhaps its in the walk?

Do they wear a badge with Hector on it so you feel obliged to be rude to them?

Perhaps we should insist that all people who provide us with a service ( Shop assistants, Bank staff, Waiters etc. Bar staff etc should wear the hector badge so we could be rude and ignore them as we are obviously "better than them" and we should not engage in adult conversation with these inferior people?:(

It strikes me that there are two posters here who should have a metaphorical bucket of very cold water thrown over them.images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSVAvbFDc28e7HkDv_RFtErFWGE-Ri6p0P5vXH1diA89LWkiDIU

ur patronising post makes rail travel sound so simple. ive traveled from newcastle to london on business quite a few occasions over the past few weeks; heres an observations i make on most journeys.

the london train near enough always leaves from platform 3. over the loudspeaker its announcing that platform 3 is the london train, all the displays on platform 3 say 'london kings cross' even the train has 'london kings cross' on the paper displays on the door. so there i am explaining to the guard that my gumtree tickets r valid ;) when another passenger says 'is this the london train m8' followed by 'r my advance tickets valid on it'

so for the vast proportion of passengers its is 'rocket science'
