Just Having A Moan About Work

Options
Hi Guys

Ive worked for a small company now for nearly 10 yrs.. I love the job that i do and get great satisfaction from making people look & feel good about themselves..

Im also best friends with the lady that owns/runs it!!!
The hours i do are great & i get 2 days off during week.

My moan is ive worked there for 10 years & in all that time they have never offered me a payrise, (i got 1 from the goverment in april this yr) when ive'd asked about getting 1 the reply always is 'we cant afford at the min' or 'its too quite' yet i know that hands have wandered in that till on many occasions & ive kept my mouth shut!!!
Also i have just been informed that we are employing a 'sat girl' and she will be paying them £15 a week... (thought she couldnt afford)

Ive had to go get a second job just so i have money to treat myself etc, my hubby works & is on a very good salary & my boss thinks that because he earns the amount he does then he should provide for me!! I dont expect that from my hubby at all, i pay for the shopping every week (we are a family of 4) i fuel my car weekly & pay for my mobile plus other things aswell!!!! the more i think about it the more angry i get!

Thank You for reading & listening to me moan xx

The way I see it, you've got 2 choices. Put up with it because you love your job and work for your best mate or leave and find something else.

Are you being paid more than minimum wage? I don't understand the part about getting a pay rise from the government in April?
    :p

I'm assuming you work in beauty. Unless you have specialist skills, this does tend to be minimum wage work. Have you thought about taking a course to expand what you can offer? If you can bring in new clients this would be a step towards getting recognised.

sorry what the 'goverment thing' meant was my tax bracket changed so i pay less tax so get a bit more wage wise.. I work as a hairdresser & im on £7.00 an hour....

Im 34 & did all my qualifications when i was 16
level 1,2 & 3 so cant better my skills anymore..

Im literally venting my frustrations lol as that £15 could be given to me rather than a sat girl who doesnt want to work lol

Start your own business, risk your own money and then hire someone and pay them more.

Your friend presumably took the risk so should she not reap the rewards?

I really dont have a clue what the going rate is but from the day i started it has been £7 an hour & gradually as my children have got older ive done more hours.... we have thought about going into business together as i do run it jointly more a less (it was hers & her ex partners, they split 5 yrs ago and she works for him as the manageress) then that way i could pay myself a little more.... my issue was her being able to find extra money for a saturday girl but not offering it me as a pay rise...

maybe Thursday is crunch time & i need to sit down & have aq serious chat with them both about it all...

You've got a lot of experience - could you not give it a go on your own? or open up another salon under the same name in partnership with the existing owner etc?
    Thinking critically since 1996....

I'd make sure you do some research as to what the going rate is. Would make it a much easier conversation if you can go in and say "I could move here, here or here and get X amount"....

Her research is likely to disappoint. Few salons are going to want to employ someone who has not refreshed their skills in nearly twenty years - techniques, equipment etc have moved on a great deal since then. Other salons operate on a rent a chair basis, so that would rely on the OP bringing in her own business. Whilst the pay is poor, the alternative is also likely to be.
