Have always wanted to go to Santorini and stay in one of the cave style white houses on the cliff.
The sunsets look great but a bit busy. Can anyone share experiences of transfers to Santorini, distance from airport, tourist info and whether it is as fantastic as it looks.

I'm going in August-September and staying in a cave house (Would prefer to be a couple of weeks later but can't get time off then). We're island hopping, so coming from Amorgos then flying back to Athens with an internal flight.
It's worth trawling through Tripadvisor forums (there is a Santorini one) and reading a bit about it. The Lonely Planet and Rough guides are great. And there are lots of videos on Youtube too such as this one

It is truly stunning, sunsets amazing volcano fantastic, great greek hospitality and the climate in september is just perfect. airport is tiny - in fact you check in and then go and sit in a taverna just outside the airport whilst your plane arrives in front of you. Amazing place0

Sounds just like Skiathos
Have been to Santorini once, off a cruise ship.
It is a lovely island. Must return there one day.0 -
Problem with holidaying on Santorini is CRUISE SHIPS.
The place is overwhelmed and hell on earth when 2 or more of the large ship are there for the day. Weather in September is hot, normal very dry with early evening sunsets 7-730pm which are fabulous -Ok for a week but little to do, all the beaches are of poor quality.
If you visit Google Earth you will gain all the info you need.0 -

I tend to agree - there are so many better and cheaper Greek islands to visit than one which can be overwhelmed by fat Americans waddling about.0 -

I had a fantastic trip there as part of an island hopping trip with Explore though not in September. We were walking so got away from the cruise crowds. Walked from Fira to Oia and watched the sunset.0 -
Santorini is a unique, dramatic island and a truly amazing experience with its black sandy beaches. Don't be put off by the cruise ships, it's really worth visiting. The weather is usually great in September (it can also get very windy.) You might like to combine it with a stay on another island too, eg Naxos or Paros?0
