Help with design of 'cheap' border (photo inside)

P1030469.jpg

We've just had the fence put up, and of course now mowing the lawn is a bit awkward!

We knew this would be an issue, but cannot decide on what to do about it.

I was thinking of a 'stone' border, which would need digging out, a membrane laid, and stones on top. Would we need a 'heavy-duty' membrane to support the stones?

Like many people, we have cats in the neighbourhood who sometimes use our garden as a toilet :( so we have to bear this in mind for future landscaping!

We both work a lot, which doesn't leave much time for gardening, and/or landscaping, and after the cost of the fence I doubt we could pay for someone to do any landscaping...

Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions!

A small hover mower will probably get under the fence rails and over the gaps round the posts.

Or just use a strimmer round the edges.

A strimmer would have no problem doing around the edges.

If you're thinking of using stones, I wouldn't expect any problem with cats - the ones around me don't seem to like digging stones, so I cover all my flower beds with them.

Whatever you do, don't put down bark chippings. To a cat, it's just the same as kitty litter.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Large stones won't attract the cats, gravel under a certain size will. I've had slate chippings in a previous garden and still found the odd 'present'.

Bark chippings are definitely a no-no.

We have bark chippings and the cats seem to prefer to sit in them and sunbathe rather than poop in them. Generally stones are poop free. Although I have found one when I was clearing leaves one year.
