I do this some of the time. (Though am not doing it "officially" as part of the challenge.) Usually when I take my food flask in. Usually a rice or pasta based meal. Which also has the added advantage of not having to make dinner after being at work. Also no queuing at the canteen or waiting for microwave. If you don't have one, I would highly recommend getting one.
I tend not to buy sandwiches from supermarkets, more because I don't like them than the cost. The local caf! at the bus station here does Tuna sandwiches for £1. The small newsagents then has crisps for under 40p. Can get piece of fruit from canteen at work for 50p, or take in from home. I make drinks at work. All in all it is rare I get one of the £3 deals from any supermarket.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
