Repairs to Greenhouse

Options
Hi,

Thanks to Ex Hurricane Ophelia I have to replace 2 pieces of glass in my greenhouse. Can I replace with polycarbonate or toughened glass instead of the original horticultural glass? Which would be best? The greenhouse is a Halls Popular 6x6.

Thank you in advance

You probably can, but... almost any glass supplies will provide standard panes of greenhouse glass for around £4 or less ...£2 for quantity where I am. Much cheaper than toughened and probably poly.

However, I came badly undone in Doris last year by mixing older and newer spring clips in a reconstructed freecycle greenhouse. It meant the different strength springs made the whole thing flex very slightly, until a pane popped. Then one more. Then another. Exactly half the house went!

I guess mixing differing glass might do the same.

Oh, edit to add... Put a shout out on your local Freecycle , you'll probably get spare glass by the car load! Probably quite a few part a greenhouses too, at the moment!

I've got a Halls popular as well, but with toughened glass.

Mr S managed to flick a stone through one of the largest panels when he was mowing the grass last year. After a bit of a faff, we found that Hall's can supply replacement glass, but they recommend getting it from a local supplier in order to save the cost of carriage.

We had a piece cut by our local glass bods - I think most towns have them.

I bought an Access greenhouse recently. Long story (not their fault) and I needed another pane of glass - so I just rang the firm and it was couriered across country to me the next day.

    Very good service from them.

Don't know what other manufacturers are like - but I would tend to think it's best to ask the actual manufacturer of your greenhouse and then you know you're getting exactly the right glass.

I don't see the point of changing the type of glass, if all the panes bar one or two are the standard 4mm horticultural variety.

I'd just get the same spec glass cut at my local glaziers. It's hardly a specialist product.

And if you ever have to cut one to size (cutters are about £2 from Screwfix) it is dead easy and even an old biddy like me can manage it!
