Can't talk about it is that right ?

A friend has been told that they are going to be put on notice of redundancy this was an informal chat they were not offered the chance to have a colleague in with them and they were told that they are not allowed to discuss this with anyone. CAn the company really tell them this ?

    If it is not official and that there will be others to be impacted, perhaps it would be understandable to tell them not to talk anyone until it is announced? Would you like to hear from your friend casually or from your manager/boss, if you were going to be made redundant?

    Short answer - yes!

    It is perfectly reasonable for an employer to speak in confidence to a member of staff and expect that confidence to be respected. If they are put on notice of redundancy then, and only then, does it become public knowledge.

    Many thanks my friend will be the only person in the pool there will be no one else affected, but I guess what you are saying is that in short she is being told something that the business wants to keep confidential and they can only do this until they start the formal procedure and then at that point they can shout it from the houses if they so desire ?

    when they say don't talk about they mean to NO ONE bit late they blabbed to a friend that can't keep their mouth shut and stuck it on the internet

    A company/manager/another can say what they like.


    The issue is what happens/actions they can take if you ignore what they say and they find out.
