I have Virgin Media XL tv service. In theory this means I can catch up with the History channel among a number of cable channels available with my service. But when I look at the catch up options it does not seem to include anything outside of the main BBC/ ITV variants. Where should I be looking?

[What On Demand services do I get on the Virgin TV XL package?

As a TV XL customer, you get the following services as part of your package:
Virgin Central
Catch Up TV
Sky Anytime
TV for XL*
Music On Demand
*TV for XL includes everything from TV for M+ and TV for L plus; Warner TV, Fox, Sky Living HD, Sky 1 HD, Sky Arts 1 HD, Discovery Channel HD, Aardman Animations, US Boxsets, National Geographic, History Channel, Military History, C&I, Bio, Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Jr]

You might have the largest package but the Catch up TV will only be the usual iplayer etc unless you have a Tivo box where you can record tv. I have noticed that since I switched to a Tivo box I can catch up on all the channels that I have on my package (M+).
