While this is brilliant news, and I welcome Martin's intervention (brilliant on TV this morning) I hope he doesn't make the mistake he has accused others of in the past, and try to reinvent the wheel.

There has already been a lot of work in this area by MALG, Royal College of Psychiatrists and Rethink Mental Illness, summarised here by MAT

THank you - this is very excititng.

Pre-launch the institute director Polly has been to meetmany scores of people in the money and mental health space. The big briefing is to ensure we're not competiting but collaberating with the other great work being done. Our idea is to generate research, ideas and bring everyone who matters together in one space. I

'm aware of the work MALG has done, but in the main its been how to treat people in debt with mental health issues. And the improvement has been commendable on the back of it.

Our agenda is subtly different though - we're soley concentrating at innovative policy solutions for prevention. Plus we're positioned to bring pressure to bear to bring the mental health, money, regulatory and political influence to get this started.

Judging by the number of posts by people who mention they have had mental health issues, when describing there debt problems, and especially where a relative with mental health issues, has taken out credit, in the OP's name, it appears this is a very widespread problem.

Anything that can be done to make life easier if your in this position, is to be welcomed.

    Well done Martin !!

    Thank you Martin.

I am currently not in a place that allows me to outline the devastating journey I have traveled over the last 40 years. My constant companion has left me numb. I'm not bitter. Nor do I feel sorry for myself. I am, however, tired.

    Exhausted.

There's nothing left in my proverbial tank. One week ago I traveled to the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. I paid for a short private consultation with one of their consultants who specialises in sleep disorders.

I have been referred for a polysomnograph.

I am hopeful that this will highlight an underlying sleep disorder which has accompanied me for the last four decades. If it does it is probable that much of the medication that I am currently prescribed will be removed and I will be given medication more suited to my condition.

Mental Health issues can be life long. And when they are they really are difficult to manage. Short term is cruel. Long term is just on a level that is beyond comprehension.

When the time is right and I feel I can talk about my experiences I will try and condense them into a small post fit for those who would like to understand.

For the time being and on behalf of many who suffer in silence I would like to say a sincere and genuine thank you.

I tried to sign up for emails from the institute and got this message:

Too many subscribe attempts for this email address. Please try again in about 5 minutes. (#8234)

It was the first time I had tried.

What a wonderful and much needed thread.
As I personally have to deal with money matters, that are my relatives with serious mental health problems. My constant battle is at long last coming to light.
For those whom I love, their mental health issues, are also mine.,
Their lack of understanding on monetary matters, is an ongoing battle for me.
I will keep an eye on this thread. As I have no support for myself and struggle on the best I can.
