what are you checking for? errors, malware, viruses etc?"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

could be running slow for a number of reasons but if it was my desktop the first thing i would do is backup, format drive and re-install a new operating system.
you need to weigh up whether that is practical or not due to age of desktop.
a link was posted for free win10 recently here, don't know if you can still upgrade from vista or if this link applies to win7 only

do a search on here for slow pc/laptop as has been covered many times"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

ok. i am not a expert. someone may be along soon to advise. my first choice would be backup, format and install more up to date operating system if hardware allowed. 2nd choice backup and factory reset if possible
if you can't do those i would uninstall any programs not needed. do a disk clean including system files and then run a program like malwarebytes
beyond that you are getting into upgrading hardware but may be more cost effective to buy a new desktop"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -

This will tell you the status of your hdd http://crystalmark.info/download/index-e.html
Slect the installer (exe) option at the top0 -
https://windirstat.net/ or the free Treesize - make some free space on the disk.. Well you actually make the space You also need space to do an upgrade.
This to check your disk https://www.passmark.com/products/diskcheckup.htm - check for hardware errors on the drive
Although you are probably running 32 bit vista, which runs on an x64 chip too, but more likely x32. You need a cpu that supports 64 bit for windows 10, plus a fair bit of ram for performance.0 -
Always good to begin with the brand name and model number of the machine.0
