Advice regarding clay soil

I know it's not a gardening forum but thought some of you green fingered people may be able to offer some advice.

My soil is heavy clay to the point that when it rains the lawn takes days to dry. At this time of year it gets muddy/sticky as soon as you srart walking on it so it's useless for the kids.

What are the best cost effective ways of improving the soil so the kids can actually enjoy the garden?
