Annual Travel insurance- Under active Thyroid

We have been told we will have to pay a supplement on our Annual Travel Insurance as I declared an Under Active Thyroid which I understand is quite common as you get older. It is nothing major. Would all insurance company charge for this ailment as a pre existing medical condition.

    Maybe cheaper to have 2 policies (ie one with no pre existing conditions)


    All companies will have to be told about any pre existing conditions, and expect a premium weighting over it.


    If you are happy to exclude it from cover some companies will allow this


    Shop round as weightings/premiums do vary

    Every policy I've ever taken out has covered my hypothyroidism as an acceptable pre-existing condition as it's not really a high risk one and hasn't cost me any more as a result.

    I'm surprised there's a premium loading due to it, provided it's well controlled and your not undergoing any current problems due to it?

    A large number of people suffer from Under active thyroid and take Thyroxine tablets for it. Yes it is a medical condition which is controlled and is higher likely to flair up suddenly on holiday. I am amazed it is included as pre existing medical condition that will put increase your annual insurance premium. Is there a list anywhere which shows what pre existing conditions are included or excluded on various travel insurance companies policies .Putting on a weighting/supplement for an Under Active Thyroid seems very harsh and unfair.

    Our Nat West Platinum account which offers free insurance as part of the package puts on an excess for an Under Active Thyroid as a condition and taking Thyroxine as a medication. A double "Whammy" It makes us wonder if we are better off looking elsewhere especially as they have increase the premium from £50 to £75 a person payment for the over £70.

    Do some quotes and see what a single trip policy would cost - may be cheaper!
