Santander Credit Card Charges!

Options
My boyfriend has had a santander credit card for a few years now, but it has recently come to light how they have been taking payment for their charges.
When he applied for his credit card with the santander bank assistant, when setting it all up he set up a direct debit to take the minimum payment each month. He asked the assistant on a number of times to confirm that this minimum payment will include the charges etc and payment will be taken from his santander debit account, and was told YES the direct debit payment will include the minimum repayment with the charges for that month.

However, this year after managing to get back online to be able to check his online banking he found that Santander were taken a payment from his debit account but also taking a payment from his credit card for his monthly charges. This in turn was taking his credit card amount over the credit card limit and causing further charges.

He has spoken to the bank a few times now about this to see what is happening and explain that he was told his minimum payments should include the monthly charges but no one has been particularly helpful but said they will change it so the charges will come from his debit account.

It was found this month nothing had changed with payments taken and today when he spoke to someone at the bank, they explained that he pays the monthly repayment amount by direct debit, then he is responsible to pay for the charges himself as this is not included in the direct debit. If the charges aren't paid then the amount due is paid from his credit card.

Surely the bank have mis-sold their credit card and made some error here.....any advice what can be done??
Thanks

    This makes little sense.

The charges should be put on his credit card. His DD should then be for min payment - which is at least 1% of balance plus fees and interest.

So the charges are correct in appearing on his credit card balance.

Sorry I meant to say fees/interest not monthly charges. As far as I am aware the monthly interest has not been included in his direct debit.

He needs to look at his statements, which will make it clear what fees apply, what the interest charge is and what the minimum payment consists of. If not specified on the statement, the card Ts & Cs will make it clear exactly how the minimum monthly payment is calculated.

If he can't work it out, post some figures on here and others can have a go at validating what Santander are doing....

Sounds like OP's boyfriend has ran his card up to its limit and interest added at the end of each billing cycle has push it over the limit, thus incurring charges.

OP, interest and charges are added to the credit card account at the end of every billing cycle, just before the statement is produced.

Let's say your boyfriend has a limit of £1,000.

If he spends up to £999, when interest is added the balance would break the £1,000 limit and incur an over-limit fee.

The minimum payment will be a percentage of the total balance due, including interest and charges.

If he doesn't understand how credit cards work he may be better getting rid of it as he will end up with a debt problem. Regular breaking of credit limit is not good for credit checks.
