Best 55" tv £800 - £1200

Everybody's needs differ but I'd avoid paying extra for curved, 3D or 4k. The first two are gimmicks for most, and there is no easily available content for the last. Also I'd be prepared to go a bit smaller if it got a better set with a newer set of specs and a remote that doesn't crumble in your hand. Refurb can get great discounts, but is a bit of a lottery with regards to returns and warranty. Instead, look out for brand new but last year's models - with CES now done, it might be a great time to get one.

I do have a soft spot for Philips as they have always worked well for me, and the better ones have ambilight (gives a colour matched glow on the wall behind the set - sounds like a gimmick but works really well). But I don't know how Philips TVs are now that they have been sold to another company, or how much a decent 55" would cost.

EDIT: I've found What TV to be a pretty good resource.

I'd say go for 1080, don't bother with the fads of 3D or curved, smart TV can be sidestepped nowadays by getting a Now TV box for a few quid, and try to step down a bit in size.

I went for a 40 inch Sony from Tesco outlet on eBay a couple of years ago, for £350. That could be less now without smart. There are 46 to 50 inch LG Panasonic Samsung etc sets there now for £250 to £400.

Was in there on Saturday and they had literally hundreds of TV's various makes including the larger screen sizes.

Reasonable prices a lot less than retail shops .You have to visit as stock changes rapidly.
