Our Journey from Debtdom to Freedom

Options
Ok, here goes...(gulp!)

If I'm completely honest, my LBM was back in 2012. I've been aware that my over-spending could not continue but in all honesty I've been in denial.

I've been an avid reader of all of the diaries on here for some time. I've learnt so much from all you guys and I'm in complete awe at what you've all achieved on your journeys and well, now I feel its my time to smash this debt once and for all - my time to be free of the worry and stress it causes me and my family.

DH is totally on-board (he's a laid back type and worries about nothing-but he understands how much it worries me). He's never been a spender, it's always been me moving from one expensive project to the next with little thought about whether I "need" it or simply "want" it or moreover can ever afford to repay it! What really frustrates me is the fact that I'm not a daft lass - I've a respectable profession - earn a great salary and I'm really proud of the job I'm doing raising two gorgeous girls. But this money/debt malarchy has me over a barrel - I feel I'm fighting a losing battle. You'll see from our signature, just how dire our situation has become...I'm totally embarrassed and ashamed of it but I'm totally determined to reverse 2 decades worth of mistakes and turn them into something truly positive.

In readiness for starting on our journey from Debtdom to Freedom, I've read some literature on the psychology of spending to help me find the root cause of my issue with over-spending and I've got some strategies lined up as a result to keep me on the straight and narrow during the inevitable ups and downs of my journey.

I've also worked with the hubster on driving down on our un-necessary outgoings and enlisted the help of YNAB and DebtPayoff apps to help keep us on budget and track our snowballing with our debt - I'll post my SOA shortly - any further help you lovely peeps can give would me welcomed muchly!

So...what's our main driver? Why now? It's simple...We're doing this for our DD's...to protect their future, to teach them the value of money, to guarantee their security...life is so uncertain...this is one thing we can make a certainty for them.

To keep me focussed I've picked up some tips from others successes on here....this is what I plan to do to keep us motivated...

-Post on our diary every day no matter how we feel
-Make a repayment a day (PAD) no matter how big or small
-Post on "small things" thread to remind us that every step no matter how small is a step towards freedom

We're aiming to keep this journey as simple as possible and take it one day at a time...We'd love you to come along and join us (and encourage us and support us) on our journey from debtdom to freedom!

Wish us luck!

Phew(huge sigh of relief) ...glad that's all done!

I've been putting this off for weeks...glad that I've finally ripped off the proverbial plaster!!

One thing I could really do with some help on is whether I should be budgeting for home insurance/clothes and other non regular items or using this money to pay off the debts to clear quicker (I'm thinking I could just reduce the overpayments to the debt the months that I need to pay one offs?)

Any advice gratefully received - I'm going round in circles on this one!

    Happy Saturday all!

    Hi Hazel

Good luck on your debt free journey.

From personal experience, I normally pay 'one-offs' as they come up... usually whacked straight onto the CC.
This is not good, I am bad! and I won't be doing it going forward.

I think it is better to budget an annual cost monthly and set the money aside for it, that way you can reliably budget from month to month... and it's less painful to put £12 a month away than pay £145 straight out (my car tax for example).

I'm using one savings account to house these and keeping the breakdown logged on a spreadsheet...at least that's the intention anyway!

But at the end of the day it's personal preference so whatever is going to work best for you.

Can I ask, £60 a month for pet insurance is a lot! what pets do you have?

Just noticed your post freckles! Thanks for taking the time to offer advice, its much appreciated...

I know you're right..budgeting every month makes more sense, I'm just grappling with the CC1 - its 12.9%APR and as I'm so heavily indebted at the mo I know I cant switch it another 0% card. I just cant get over paying that and having money accruing in the bank!

I may throw everything at CC1 until the new year and then start monthly savings to the one-offs from Jan as a half way house....

Pet insurance is for my poorly old mut....she's struggling now and I'm loathe to cancel it as I know the bills are gonna keep rolling in to make her comfortable , bless her.

Have a great weekend all...pork belly is calling.....nom nom...
