Ikea delivery charges vs hiring van

Options
Having spent ages filling my shopping basket on the Ikea website, with a complicated combination of Pax wardrobe bits ‘n’ bobs (and cursing the fact that random components aren’t available to order online), I proceeded to the check-out only to discover that they don’t deliver to my post-code – despite having 2 stores within a ½ hour drive…

Aaaarrggghhh!!!

Anyway…

Looks like I’m going to have to go and fight the hordes in store, and load up my own trolley.

I know that Ikea deliver, if you do all the work for them and give them your stuff after the check-out. Any idea what their delivery charges are like vs just hiring a van and doing it myself?

On the face of it, the van option feels like a better bet – I’ll get the stuff home the same day, and I’ll have the flexibility to tear around the country when my local store has half the bits I want out of stock…

Do their delivery, rather than hiring a van.

Check and double check the print out that you take to the cash desk to pay, and make sure that they have ordered the right bits for you. We asked for mirrored doors, and the assistant ordered plain 'wood'.

After you have paid, and paid the delivery people, it becomes their responsibility. So if anything is missing or broken, they have to return it and deliver a new one to you.

If you rent the van, and get everythng home and then find a problem, you'll have to rent another van to return it and get replacements.

I know as they did this to us with both the wrong doors, and a broken door!

So you don't actually have to load your trolley up yourself - just tell 'em what you want?

When I bought PAX stuff, had to collect it all from the various shelves, take it through the checkouts and take it to their delivery place where it was all taken off me and then a couple of days later arrived at the door.

We had to do the same as ckerrd - find everything, take it through the checkout and then onto the delivery area. It was eventually delivered on the second attempt due to the first guy having seen we lived in a 3 storey townhouse and driving off again (!)...

However, we cannot fault the two guys who actually delivered everything - they carried everything up two flights of stairs. We ended up giving them some cold drinks and a tip...

Hmm - the other responses made me think, and I realise that I have only ever bought wardrobes from the Wembley branch. They have an external warehouse for the large stuff, including kitchens and wardrobes. Don't recall other branches having that........

and it's great! no having to lug heavy wardrobes onto a trolley - you hand over a piece of paper & the receipt to the delivery people, and they collect it & bring it home (though they had to be persuaded to do stairs ;) - cash rather than drinks did 3 flights! )

    I LOVE and HATE Ikea!

Love the furniture but hate being dissapointed when things are not in stock, not able to reserve or buy online in my area and getting ripped off for delivery.

I went last night with my mum who had a long list of things she wanted to buy and have delievered (£35) including a day bed & mattress and Pax combination wardrobe. We got the picking list for the wardrobe which comfirmed the items were in stock but by the time we got to the location, the doors and frame were out of stock, someone beat us to it.

So, even though the day bed was in stock we didn't get it, just bought all the wardrobe bits that would fit in the car as she didn't want to pay out for delivery for only half the amount of items and have to pay again and come back to the store to get the rest with no assurances that they would be in stock!

I had the same problem with my Pax system, typically the last item (door) I went to get was out of stock! Grrrrrrrrrr

I actually got everything off my own list last night though, Yay!

I think £30-40 for a day's van hire, and the flexibility that gives, sounds like the right choice.

I'll get the wardrobes home the same day, and won't have to worry about being in for delivery.

Plus, I can do a cross-country tour in search of the inevitable missing door...

Will have to tip myself for carrying everything upstairs, mind...

  • thanks, after reading this message we have decided to hire a handy man and a van.

They picked up the ikea furniture and then assembled it for us.

Saved a lot of hassle with trying to set it all up!
