sony xperia wifi not working - any suggestions

I have a sony xperia mobile phone. Couple of months old. When I first got it I tried out the wifi and it worked fine. Now it seems to have stopped working. Tonight the OH and I were in a hotel bar with free wifi (strong signal) and attempted to log on to it. He has a Samsung S3 and connected at once. My Sony Xperia reported an authentication problem and just would not connect. (We are both with Orange.) Any other Sony users out there with same issue who have same problem/found a solution?

which browser are you using? I find on a phone that opera can't use the connection, but the standard browser can as it picks up on an "access page" from the free network which you have to go through first..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Have you had a software update recently?, Sony introduced some bugs in Wifi on the Xperia Z/ZR/ZL etc. a while ago.
