Losing fixed tariff if moving house

I have a E-on EHL cumulative switch tariff which runs to June 2018 but I am advised that if I move house before then I will lose the tariff as it relates to the property and not me.
This is a ridiculous situation as the property has not made a contract with E-on, I have.
What is the point of a fixed tariff if you are then unable to move without penalty.

    What penalty?
When you move, the E.ON contract will be finalised without any penalty to you. No early exit fees, you just pay a final bill for the standing charge and power used.

But the contract you made is for that address, not any other. When you move you are in a deemed contract with the existing supplier at that property, and you cannot switch until you register for an account with the. accounts are not transferable. I assume you haven't moved in a long time, as it's been this way since privatisation in the 80's.
The alternative is that every property has to be disconnected and then reconnected upon a change of occupier.
gsminx: I think by 'penalty', the OP means the loss of their current cheap fix.

Hello pdc95 and to confirm, our tariffs aren't transferrable between different properties. You won't be able to take it with you when you move home.

As macman says, our contracts are based on individual properties with specific metering set ups and usage. These circumstances might be different at another address particularly if in a different region or with another supplier. So we're consistent, we restrict our tariffs to set addresses.

It looks like you're on the E.ON EHL Collective Fixed 2 Year June 2016 tariff. Please don't worry about exit fees. Although this tariff has exit fees of £30 per fuel, they don't apply when moving home. These only kick in when changing supplier outside of the renewal window.

If you let us have details of the move, including the meter readings for the day you give up responsibility, we'll use these to close your account and issue a final bill. Totally understand, moving home is a busy time with many other things to do. If it helps, there's a form on our website you can use to do this. Might make it a bit easier. If you prefer to speak to us, we've specialist Home Moves teams who will be happy to help. Contact details are on our website.

Sorry I can't give you the answer you want pdc95 but hope the move goes well.

When you move, the first thing to do is contact the existing suppliers at the new address and sign up with them - if it's EoN, then look at the T&C's of your current tariff, if not, then look at switching once you have signed up.

A few weeks ago one of my mates had the same argument with EoN.

His solution was to carefully read the terms and conditions of his EoN tariff then get on the phone, quote the relevant clause in the T&C and get the call handler to read to him the same clause - result was that his tariff was portable from one address to another and the rep agreed that this was so and put him back on the original tariff.

You need to carefully read your tariff T&C's and make sure whether or not your tariff is portable.

The penalty is that I lose the balance of my tariff advantage and have to move on to a more expensive tariff. That to me is a penalty !

That would explain it then. Would you prefer the 'penalty' of arriving at a property with no heat, light or power, and waiting several days for both to be reconnected? I suspect not.

What tariff is your mate on D_M_E?

We did try this on some, but not all, fixed price tariffs a bit ago. We stopped it as it proved too messy to administer due to the reasons I mentioned earlier (post #4). Also, the relevant part of the terms and conditions (under Moving out) emphasised to customers that they 'may be able to take your tariff with you when you move.' It wasn't guaranteed but depended on certain conditions being met.

None of the tariffs we currently have available has this term. Similarly with the OP's tariff, E.ON EHL Collective Fixed 2 Year June 2016, this term doesn't apply and I can confirm they won't be able to take it with them if they move home.

Our terms and conditions for individual tariffs can be seen on our website. This includes the EHL Collective Fixed 2 Year June 2016. The relevant bit is section 7 (Moving out).

    Hope this explains.
