Money Moral Dilemma: Should I own up about my day off?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I'm working as a temp at the moment and had a day off the other week. I told my manager I didn't want to use my holiday allowance, so expected to only be paid for four days. However, they forgot about the day off and I've been paid for the full five days. Should I own up?

Unfortunately the MSE team can't always answer money moral dilemma questions as contributions are often emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be enjoyed as a point of debate and discussed at face value.

Let me think long and hard about this one.

    Done it.

Yes, you should point out that you have been overpaid - just as quickly as you would point out if you were underpaid.

    No dilemma here folks!

  • Yes. Before you find it automatically deducted from next week's wages or end of assignment when you are short changed and can't afford to be.

    Yet another dilemma that isn't.

    Totally agree.

These dilemmas either are some sort of investigation as to how moral people are or, if they're based on real threads, show how morally suspect the UK has become
  • You didn't earn it, you know you were overpaid and, if you don't speak out, you could lose your job through your dishonesty.

Confess now before they notice, because they will, and pleading ignorance never works.
  • Yes, we are all into saving money, not being dishonest.
  • It sounds to me like the employer used a day of holiday to cover the day-off. Rather than making an overpayment.

The MoneySaver should check what their remaining holiday allowance is.
  • Why make yourself dishonest for one days pay - no point - no dilemma!!
  • Of course tell them!

(It might not be as easy as you think to get it sorted though. I was overpaid a few years ago, by almost a full month. I told my store manager who told me to keep quiet (!) then I worked out that I had been paid for my month's work plus that of a colleague. He had by then been paid and also told me to keep quiet, as did the person I rang at payroll, and the area manager!

It took three months for payroll to sort it out, and they seemed to be surprised at the extra hassle I was causing them by (in my eyes) doing the right thing.)
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.
