Got a few friends from the states and they seem to like genuine Scottish whiskey for some reason so that could be worth while looking at or for me when I buy drink for someone if I have no idea what they like I would look at a wine shop/main drink retailer and buy a voucher for them.0

no such thing as "genuine Scottish whiskey"
If its Scottish its whisky
if its whiskey its Irish
( also the OP asked for something "English" )0 -
Thanks for your suggestions about scottish whisky but good whisky is quite expensive?0

Get a gin taster box - theres plenty of english companies who do them, a quick google would help.0

It depends on how you define the term expensive, that would be better to advise for any gift if you had mentioned the price range whether below $10 and we must familiar with the idea you are sending the gift for, without the purpose of gift it is quite a little hard to suggest any gift. As a generic case you can send wrist watch, perfumes, some sort of food item like cake, bouquet and much more. It depends on how far you can think.0

If you're going to post this, then check Royal Mail regs - they are very restrictive on sending alcohol. How about liqueur chocolates (Harveys Bristol Cream is an English as they come!), which are much cheaper than a bottle of spirits but still come into the 'English alcohol' category.0

How much do you want to spend. Is the friend going to receive the item in person or by post?0

Send 'em slabs of supermarket milk chocolate. Easier to post, less risk of impaired driving & Ours is just So Much Nicer than the American stuff, it''ll blow their minds.
I would have said Dairy Milk, but that's been tinkered with by Kraft (an American company) so I'd head for supermarket own brand & possible Lidl/Aldi. Yes, even our cheap stuff is nicer than their Hershey "confection".
Me, biased? I sample extensively To Make Sure...0 -

If you don't need to post it, try one of the many M&S alcohol gifts: http://www.marksandspencer.com/l/flowers-and-gifts/food-and-wine-gifts/alcohol-gifts/?facetOpen=true&cachedFilters=+96+10+260+10+260&priceMin=10&priceMax=260¤tPriceMin=10¤tPriceMax=260&lastSelectedSize=&resultsPerPage=96&sortBy=product_price_from|0&pageChoice=1&selectedAccordions=checkbox-2000|checkbox-462|checkbox-470|checkbox-42
