    I tried to claim the married couple allowance. Having failed to do so online I tried ringing but sadly didn't have 35 minutes to spare just to speak to someone.


    Why can't they just do it the old school way and send a form out? It's almost like they don't want people to claim it...

    You should be able to do this online. What didn't work? Did you use this link: https://www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance

    I didn't have the exact amount from wife's P60 to hand.

    That's hardly the fault of the online system. You do need to have all your information for your application, and it tells you on page 1 that you need details from the P60.
