Should I tell the gym my direct debit has stopped?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...

My other half and I have a joint gym membership at the local sports centre. We pay monthly by direct debit, but I've just noticed that the payments stopped about 18 months ago and we haven't paid since. My husband doesn't go often but I go three times a week. Should I say something or carry on with my free workouts until they notice?

Pathetic! You 'noticed' after 18 months ... ha ha ha!
  • Why did the payments stop, and why didn't you notice? Seems to me you need to check all your outgoings, give yourself a financial makeover ASAP, see if there's anything else you've missed or are being over- or under-charged.

As to the gym, if you're using their facilities and they're not a charity, then you should pay the going rate.

Having said that, why didn't the gym notice when your payments stopped? They need to have a good look at their admin systems!

I had something similar happen to me, but to a lesser extent.

My gym stopped taking my direct debit, for reasons unknown - I didn't notice as my DDs went from a separate account I had for fixed bills, which I just topped up every month and rarely checked.

My gym had pretty lax security and just used to ask for a name; someone eventually checked it against the system and realised the error. I'd missed about three months by that point. They let me off the back payments though, which I'd have been prepared to pay as I used the service!

Giving you the benefit of the doubt and that you really didn't notice until now - now you have noticed, it's wrong to carry on. So two choices really - tell them the truth, and be prepared to pay for the previous months, or 'rejoin' as a sole member and start paying for what you're using.
  • I found this article very amusing.

Have you ever tried to cancel a DD with a Gym. They make you jump through so many hoops to do so and won't hesitate to pull you up to ensure you commit to the full term. Take the win from the Gym. I'm confident they have members who are paying a DD who are not going and are simply waiting for their 12/18/24 month contract to run it's course. Morally unethical but the fitness industry is an industry built on small print T&C's.
  • If this is a local authority gym then not paying is theft from other local tax payers.

We had a similar 'dilemma' to this several months ago.
Really MSE? Is this really considered a 'dilemma'?

Do we have to ask a forum whether we should be honest or not?

I am saddenend that people feel they would ever need to ask if they should behave in an honest and decent manner.

You use the facility. You agreed to pay a certain sum on direct debit to pay for your use of the facility. You continue to use the facility but are no longer abiding by your agreement to pay for it.

    PAY UP!

No, enjoy it while it lasts.
A big corporate Gym fleeced me for £600 for a total of 6 visits several years ago. Refused to let me out of the contract. Stuff em!
You make the most of it.
  • How many times do we have to say "theft is theft" in answer to these "problems"

At my gym, 3 classes a week would mount to £84 a month if you had to pay for them individually, I don't know what you should be paying per month, but it's probably not that much (surely?)

You are stealing from them. Pay up! hopefully, they'll let you off the back payment.
